Looking for people who ALWAYS sends newby's seeds

Monticello, IA

I will be taking my spring trip to seedsavers in Decorah Iowa. I will pick up some heritage seeds for the first 5 oldtimers who are always giving out seeds to newbys as my re-introduction to Daves Garden. So many of you like Robynznest and critterologist sent me absolutely amazing seeds to make me welcome. Here's my thanks and the site to Seedsavers. Seedsavers's goal is to maintain heritage seeds and I love to go support their efforts:

5 oldtimers pick out five packages of seeds of your choice and remind me again how to get your addys. Will be going to Seedsavers in 2 weeks since it's STILL snowing here in Iowa :(.

Min, that's really lovely of you! I don't know that I'm one of the top 5 "seed sharers" on DG, but since you invited me by name... :-)

I do still need bush bean seeds, and I've heard really good reports about 'Dragon's Tongue' and 'Royalty Purple Pod' beans. I'd also be interested in their recommendation for a bush green snap bean, preferably relatively stringless & straight (good for dilly beans), one that might do well in our hot & humid summers.

I was enchanted by their photo of "Prickly Caterpillar," Scorpius muricatus, which I've never seen before... but now I *must* grow it, LOL!

I'm not sure I have a 5th pick... I was going to say 'Grandma Einck's Dill', but I don't know what makes me think I could grow that dill when every other dill seedling I've grown has whithered and died on me. It's the one herb so far that I just can't grow! I'll keep buying my dill at the market when I make pickles. Don't worry; I have plenty of fennel and other goodies for the caterpillars!

Browsing... Good golly, there's a tomato with variegated foliage, reminds me of 'Fish Pepper', which I plan to combine this year with 'Silvery Fir Tree' tomato (let me know if you want seeds for either of those.. I've got a couple other tomatoes & peppers that are on the SSE lists, too). Oh! Purple radishes. Bright purple. I think I had a couple of radishes that color in a mix once, and they were so cool!

Yep, that's my 5th pick, pretty please -- 'Plum Purple' radish.

Thank you!

The address exchange is under the "extras" tab on your home page... or you can Dmail me for my address, and maybe we'll be able to figure out if I have a few seed packets you could use this year. I know you intended this as a gift and not a trade, but... you know how it is! :-)

Min, thank you so much. I was just telling my DH I needed to get my Tomato seeds ordered so there will be time to get them started. I would love to get some Cherokee purple and Black Krim tomato seeds. Amish melon, Jimmy Nardello pepper seeds, Moon and Stars (Van Doren strain) Watermelon.

Glad you are enjoying your seeds, if you need anything else let me know I might have it in my stash.

No more seeeedddsssss, NO more seeddddddsssss lol The last time you guys sent me seeds, I had over 300 plants to put outside and my back was muttering naughty things at you lol. Let me get these one I have and the ones I'm getting going and then we will see. lol

Robin, don't know if you have a compost pile handy but I put my watermelon seedlings right on top of the compost, they love the extra nitrogen and for some reason, I had none of those green bugs that loves to eat the stems. It's my way of using that big pile before spreading it in my garden

The trick is to start the seeds a little later, so you can pot things up in 2 inch pots or 48 cell flats rather than in larger pots, which are more work to get into the garden... Since they're small, you can plant out 48 basil or sweet alyssum seedlings in no time... I've stopped counting plants, LOL. I just keep track of how many flats I've managed to put under the lights. And I give away a lot of seedlings each spring -- that spares my back a lot! :-)

Thats where I usually put my spagetti squash and pumpkins. Thanks, I may add watermelon to the mix too.

I *thought* I would have problems germinating so I sowed EVERY seed everyone gave me. I was passing out plants left and right and had "rented" every desktop uv lights here at work. Finally rented a spot at the high school greenhouse that was unused at the moment. I have almost all the supplies needed to convert one of my six barns into a greenhouse. Those double walled poly's are expensive until I factor in how much I spend on plants/trees/TRACTOR every year :).

I've got to make sure distantkin sees this thread... Have you heard about her efforts gathering people's extra seeds and sending them out to newbies? She says she's sending out half a dozen big BE's a day, absolutely stuffed with seeds!

I'm a new newbie of a week or so, so no way am I expecting to pick out seeds. The title of your thread caught my eye, then I had to open the picture (it's called getting lost on DG)
I just wanted to comment on how beautiful the pictureis, to say that I'm such a newbie that I don't even know what most are, hahaha.

But, I also wanted to say that I ordered MY copy of the Seed Starter catalog earlier today. I must be doing something right!! or you guys are wearing off on me =)

Enjoy your trip. I cant wait to get my catalog.
