Mystery Butterflyweed

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I have had a butterfly weed in my garden for several years now like maybe four years and have never gotten seeds from it and have no idea what it is but I love the flowers and foliage on it and I’m hoping someone on here can tell me which one it is so I can find some more seeds somewhere. The butterfly weed has sort of a dark purple red bloom maybe a pinkish dark purple red lol Hard to explain, the leaves have a dark green leaf and it’s pretty thick with red veins going thru it, would anybody know which one this is? I have no pictures maybe this summer but by the description I was hoping to get an idea so I could find some seeds to try and see if I could get more plants of this for this year, my plant doesn’t get big like the other ones either this may be because where it’s growing it doesn’t get fed or watered much but from what I’ve seen of the other plants they don’t really need that much and it’s shorter never gets to 3’ high only about 2’, can anyone help please? I could take some cuttings off of it but there really isn’t much to that plant and not long after it reaches full height the cats are on it and I hate to take away from them :)

A long time ago someone sent me some purple butterfly weed could it possibly be that one, I’ve never seen seeds to this one on here since to try them again, one of these days I’ll learn to label my plants but with butterfly weed you wouldn’t think you would have to lol

I just know one of you experts out there will know which one I have 8^) Help?

What about this one? Asclepias purpurascens. Very pretty, too.

And here's the Milkweed Farms list of Milkweeds and pictures that might help you out: http://www.milkweedfarm.com/catalog.html

They have various seeds for sale, but there are other places to buy seeds that are cheaper and of course there are always DG traders.....!

I have a feeling this is the purple one and I have never seen the seeds to even buy and you never see them on here I have a dmail from the person I got some purple from a long time ago but I just can't imagine going thru all of those dmail that's a bunch and just no time right now lol Thought I would give the thread a shot, I'll check those links out t, thanks, I've looked at a lot of pictures of butterfly weed but most of them don't show that much of the leaves? So it's hard to tell you know? LOL

I'm in the middle of washing jugs right now so will check them out a little later thanks for your trouble t :) I hope one of them is it!

Yes, a few places sell the seeds and these members list it on the DG seed trading forum--most of them want it, though!

Good luck!

You know that looks like it, but I wonder why I never get seeds off of mine! I have a plant in the back yard and one in my bird garden they never have multiplied? No Seeds lol Thanks t, I never knew what it was called to look it up in the plantfiles, I owe you one! The flowers look a little different but I'll chalk that up to the camera :) I'm more than happy to buy seeds just to get some more lol

maybe it's not an asclepias. Maybe it's a eupatorium--joe pye weed? no seed pods on them.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Nope, it's a butterfly weed :) I have a couple of joe pye weeds and they aren't anything like those they are like the butterfly weeds on the bloom but the leaves are totaly different they are thicker with a red vein in them almost like a rubber plant in the house but not quite as thick. I'm looking for some purple butterfly weed seeds soon as I can get around to it today, I have a lot of transplanting to do first :) I think that's what it is, I so appreciate your work on that, I was going to close the thread but it didn't have the thing to click on at the top above the thread :)

Thanks Cindy! I've googled and couldn't find any for sale, I'm making an order, hmmm doesn't say how much shipping is until I get to the last part lol Thanks again so much!

I find that irritating also! They should give you some kind of idea about shipping policy before you order the different kinds of seeds. Sometimes I put an order for one seed in just to see what comes up for shipping. It is getting ridiculous what some places will charge, may be more than the cost of the seeds if you aren't ordering very many. Anyway, Prairie Moon has quite a few milkweed species.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Well the place I ordered from hasn't even mailed the seed yet I'm hoping to get them in the seed trays before spring lol

I don't remember how much I paid for shipping but I orderd three packs just to make the shipping worth it I'll probably plant most of them anyway, looked like they had a lot of nice seeds but I really tried to stay away from ordering more just waiting to see what happens with this seed order first and I have soo many seeds to plant that I won't get them all done this year anyway LOL I ordered them from Gardens North and don't think they are in the states, but from what I did see of their seed selection I will be ordering from them next year if this goes well, think it was $5 for shipping, I would have paid $10 to get these seeds because I have been looking for them for years just didn't know what to look for LOL
