Perch or No Perch?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

My husband recently brought home gourds just right for nesting wrens. Info says the hole should be 1 ¼ inches. We are curious about whether we should add a perch. That's optional when you buy them.

What about varnish? I’m sure store bought houses might have it but is it necessary and more…could it be harmful to the birds?

Thanks for your help!

I've always heard No perch to deter other birds. But sparrows are nesting in mine. LOL

Hi Stacey, How are you?

Heres some info on finishing gourds for bird houses.

I think it says use Thompsons water seal.

Pelle, I'm feeling pretty good all things considered...How are you doing??

We decided no perch thanks to y'all and we decided after they were sanded and cleaned out just to leave them natural. The info Paul read was that gourds will last a couple of years left natural and up to 5 years with a good sealer. We're going to (attempt to) grow some of our own using seed we collected from these gourds.

They really came out pretty once they were sanded. We may be a bit too late but Paul got all 4 hung around the yard.

Thanks for your help!
