Beginning Farmer and Rancher Opportunities

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Land Link helps beginning farmers and ranchers gain access to the land, financing, knowledge and skills that they need to make a successful start.

Financing for Beginning Farmers and Ranchers
Land Link also serves as the nation's premier information and referral source on farm transitions and financing. Before seeking outside financing, beginning farmers and ranchers need to do some basic planning. See our financial picture overview with 8 factors beginning farmers and ranchers should consider before seeking financing. Then look at a review of beginning farmer financing programs.

We advocate for innovative measures like the Nebraska's Beginning Farmer Tax Credit Act that make it possible for established farmers to receive a tax credit when they rent equipment, livestock, or land to a beginning farmer or rancher. Nebraska tax incentive programs encourage cooperation with beginning farmers or ranchers. Look at a review of the tax incentive program fact sheet. You can also find a succession planning questionnaire (pdf) to help with retirement planning.

Thanks for the link. Looks like I'm too old for it to help me. Just by a year or 2. NOT! lol

They need a "Turning over a New Leaf" program for those of us over 40...(sticking with the agricultural theme you know....) ::grin::

I agree with you. Why do all the young pups get all the breaks. It's us oldsters that need 'em. LOL

I have a good way for someone to start. My wife and I own 7 acres of farmland in SW Florida to build a self sustaining way of life. The only problem is that I am disabled, and live on SSDI and VA pensions which means we have enough money to live, but it's tight. So we are looking for partners to come join with us in the project. We need someone who can purchase a nice doublewide mobile home with enough room for all of us. Doing this we would become partners in the farm. We would all work the farm and we all would share in the farm. If you are interested in something like this please contact us.

And for folks looking for hands on experience and willing to work for room and board, maybe a small stipend, there's the Good Farming Apprenticeship Network. This bills itself as "a highly successful mentorship program putting together novices and teamsters who are experienced in draft animal farming and logging." This service is maintained by Rural Heritage for no charge to either those offering an internship or those seeking one. A sign-up form may be obtained through:
ruralheritage.com/apprenticeship/
or

The listing from this last spring had positions available from BC to South Carolina to Colorado. All over the continent!

No age limit mentioned, just plenty of hard work! =)
