Has any one had experience with "deep planting" (bud union 6" below surface) hybrid tea roses? I garden in zone 3--bought the book and sounds really easy, but does it work?
deep planting hybrid teas
I had heard a lecture on rose care last week where the woman said that planting below the graft was fine, but that's as far as *I've* ever heard it - 6"? Shew! Let us know how it goes for you!
sam, i've never done that, but i would think the main issue would be aeration of the roots.
But if you amended the planting soil with perlite or something that might aid in aerating the soil i would think they would do better.
I don't think you need to go quite that deep samting. Normally covering the graft/bud union is recommended for those of you in the north. Usually in the winter to help protect it from freezing temps. You normally gently remove the "cover" once the danger of heavy frost is past. I can feature planting that deep to cover the union. I know it gets cold in ND, but common........LOL I have friends in MN who use both dirt and straw to mulch over their roses for winter. Who is the author and what is the title of the book?
doccat 5 - The name of the book is "Tender Roses in Tough Climates" by Douglas Green.
Thanks, I'll see if my library might have it.
Samting,
We plant ours 2-4" below ground in Indiana, Zone 5. That doesn't answer your question, but probably somebody in the Rose Forum could help better, except they all seem to live in Z7-9 LOL! Maybe you can find a cold-climate lurker there who would know. :))
I would do it if I were you.
Suzy
Hi Samtig. Your northern neighbor here. This method of planting roses is common to my area. And then heaping soil over the base for the winter also. I don't grow hybrid teas anymore, but I wouldn't hesitate to put the graft 6 inches deep. I have an old newspaper clipping of an interview with a rose gardener from southern Manitoba. Will see if I can find it. He grew a lot of HTs.
