N. J. Residents. Bill to protect red knots vote soon.

Summit, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'd seen a documentary on PBS about how it seems red knots are being imperiled because there are many fewer horseshoe crab eggs which they depend upon for gaining weight for their migration. This show and some things I've read, indicated the use of horseshoe crabs as bait by fishermen is believed by many to be a large part of the problem. I received an alert from Audubon requesting support to protect the horseshoe crabs.

I'm passing along a link anybody NJ residents interested, who would like to make a phone call, or send an email or letter.

Thanks, Lori, that's really interesting. I didn't know about that and found this link that explains the history of the issue.

Pelle and sempervirens,

Thanks for taking action. I'm very sorry the site wasn't working properly. I sent my letters a few minutes before my post here, which was a rather weird time of day, so I wonder if it might be a matter of their server not being able to handle the load.

Pelle, I'd be curious to know if you hear back from Audubon, and what they say about the problems. Your idea to post this on Bird Watching sounds good, but I'd better warn people they may have problems.

CompostR,

Thanks for the link with more information. It definitely sounds to me like these birds should be protected under the federal Endangered Species Act as mentioned in the link.

Thank you for your help and support. Step one went as hoped, and was unanimous so now it goes to the Governor for approval!!
