What happened to all those Rip Van Winkles?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

I planted 50 new Narcissus 'Rip Van Winkle' in the fall of 2006 and they all came up and flowered in spring 2007. They finished out, but a coupla-few seemed to have something going on with the foliage (white scarred steaks if I'm recalling clearly) and I think I pulled out and disposed of a several rotting bulbs before they went dormant.

I have maybe one bulb that has come up.

In the same bed (but not interplanted), all my other bulbs are back. 'Van Sion' and 'Ice Follies' are in full bloom.

I feel like they came with some disease or fungus that over the summer had its way with them. The bed has nothing else in it, so it wasn't watered at all, just what fell from the sky.

Can anyone shed some light on this, perhaps someone that has seen the same thing with RCW or other Narcissus?

My RVW have started to flower, I only had a couple to start with I think and over the space of about 9 years or so they have increased quite well and have remained healthy. Last autumn I moved a couple more to another spot, they push themselves out the ground as they multiply and the moles dig under them too.

As you had so many it is strange they have disappeared altogether, so I would guess something got them!

Enjoy mine! :~)

Thanks for the pretty!

You've answered one question I had--whether they were good perennializers.

I'm waiting for mine to make their appearance... last year was the first year for them in a new bed... but my front yard is shaded & colder, so everything pops up more slowly there!

Oh yes they spread nicely, but of course they take some time before the new bulbs flower so I don't usually get many flowers 'as yet' but they should be getting mature. As I move a couple here and there they start to spread again. I like the dwarf foliage too, it always looks good (amongst the dead stuff, lol, clean up job in order).

critter, I think your bulbs are a bit behind ours anyway. Mine are on a north facing bank and seem to like it there, but they do get some sun.
