Need help planning marginal garden

Worthington, IN

I am located in Zone 6. Zip code 47471. I am planning to start a bog garden this spring. The area is about 20 feet by 30 feet. The clay soil will be perpetually wet with some standing water in portions of the garden most of the time. The garden will be planted in a full-sun location. I am a novice but very interested in getting started. I would like both ground cover and taller flowering plants. Any help and advice regarding what plants to plant will be greatly appreciated.

Louisiana iris would do great. Also lizard tail, horsetail reed, camelion plant, creeping jenny, purple or pink rush, cattails, duckpotato, elephant ears and umbrella plant. You can find all of these at Lowe's or Home Depot in the spring. All of these have done well in my bog and come back every year. Good Luck.

Thank you, Betty. Bogs don't seem to be too popular but it is something I want to try and I need to deal with a wet area in my back yard.

Various cannas should do well for blooms and giant reed grass for textural interest as well as height. The reed grass looks a lot like bamboo without being so invasive. Mine gets incredibly tall.

bwilliams is in Kentucky if you can find one of his posts. He has created a beautiful blooming lotus bog for his mom. I would assume the weather constraints would be about the same(?)

Marsh Marigolds are great to start off the Springtime with. They are a Water Gardeners answer to Daffodils for the advent of Spring☺ They rebloom , although each subsequent bloom will be smaller. They are a vibrant yellow and have a beautiful leaf☼
