I'm in SE Alaska on Prince Of Wales Island. The climate here is temperate, but VEEERRRY wet.We get about 100+ inches of rain a year here, much of it during the summer growing season. The soil is poor and needs help.I use raised beds to grow herbs and flowers.
Any Alaskans out there?
Hi Ned!
Although quite south of you, we do share the blessing & curse of abundant rainfall. However - you definately win on volime.
Raised beds are wonderful, aren't they? I was just smiling about that earlier in the week - my ground soil is cold - the soil in the RB's is on the warm side.
What are you planting, and how long is your growing season.
By the way, Soferdig might show up - he doesn't live there, but travels up your way frequently.
Hope your weather is cooperating with your gardening forays! =:0)
Ned Hudson! I saw this post and yelled over to Harley, "Hey, does your friend Ned live in Thorne Bay?" "Yep," he answers, "and he's a gardener, grows a lot of flowers and herbs." It must be you. I've seen some of Harley's pictures of you though I've never met you in person. Holly
Holly-that's quite a shock,you replying so quick.How have you all been?I'll e'mail you(Harley)with anything new,but there hasn't been anything new.More in e'mail.
Katye-I just grow a few herbs and some flowers.I get a lot of satisfaction out of starting my seedlings indoors in March. Most of my raised beds are growing various mints-I've got 6 or 7 different ones, including the wild one that grows along the river.
What a small world!!! Welcome Ned - I'm not living up there, but I grew up in Fairbanks. My closest friend from school is one of the Everts family of Everts Air Cargo. Don't know whether they haul stuff up your way or not.
Good to hear from you. What are the temps up there right now?
Katie59-Fairbanks is a long way from me.All our food, fuel, comes in on our weekly barge. The temp is about 38* with rain.Only had one cold spell when it got down to about 6* above zero.
Everts Air is headquartered in Anchorage now, I think. What do you do up there, Ned?
So are your temps pretty close to Seattle temps?
Katie59-YEP,we run just a few degrees lower than Seattle, with a lot more cloud cover during the summer.I grew up just north of Bellingham,so I'm no stranger there in WA.I'm retired now,but I was a timber cruiser until my legs gave out, then worked in a couple small sawmills, then last few years in a convenience store.
Mauryhillfarm-Holly that pic looks a lot like this one-----

Happy Birthday, Ned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heeheehee
Happy Birthday Ned all my best wishes.
Thank you,Linda and Willowwind.Another year forward into my senior status. No cane, walker or wheelchair yet, though.
After 4 hours of potting plants and carrying large sacks of dirt I'm at least ready for a walker. But it was a great day. We didn't get wet and working in the greenhouse in shirt sleeves. Patricia
I'm still recovering from chemo & radiation treatments that finished last October.Getting outside is helping me a bit.Still trying to regain a little lost weight.I spread a little steer manure and some half rotten seaweed today.Planted a few more seeds indoors, too.Hope I'm not jumping the gun on that.
Well then you need a few prays and a lot more good wishes. The sun on your face is good medicine always. Don''t over do it right? Sure.
Happy Birthday, Ned!!
Thanks,Katie.
