Now that spring is here and the nurseries are restocking, what has everyone purchased so far this year? Browsing the nurseries in spring is one of my favorite things to do. :)
Yesterday I picked up Rock Penstemon, Brazos Penstemon, and West Texas Mistflower. (It's hard to believe it today, since I just came in from building a snowman with my daughter! Hopefully it will warm up enough this weekend to do some planting...)
A few weeks back I had bought Western White Honeysuckle, Carolina Wolfberry, "fanfare" blanket flower, bicolor sage, and hardy blue aster, and I mail ordered a vernal witch hazel.

Spring purchases?
Wow Dennis!!! You are doing good, I haven't been to any nurseries yet, I called Redenta's and they said their stock isin't in yet.
This weather is crazy, I had the most boring day, cold dreary and wet, oh well, it will pass.
Josephine.
where is redenta's, jo? and dennis, where do you go?
There is one here in Arlington, not far from me, and one in Dallas.
what do they specialize in?
They are organic and they carry Natives but not exclusively, Green Mamas is the same.
Don't you wish there was a nursery that carried just natives?
Of course it would have to be a non profit place, natives are harder to raise and they take longer, so there wouldn't be much profit.
Sometimes I think that native plant nurseries should be given a subsidy by the state to help establish a good market, just like they do for the farmers.
I live in Grapevine, so Tinker Grove Garden in Colleyville and Green Mama's in North Richland Hills are the closest for me. I had a dentist appointment in Dallas yesterday, so I hit the Redenta's there. They had just finished unloading a big shipment right as I arrived. Good timing! :)
I also had jury duty in Fort Worth, and get several of the other plants at Weston's while I was over there.

My Big Dipper order arrived today. Phygelius, a pretty new yarrow, and rodgersia.
oooooooooooh!!! which yarrow is it?
This one is called Salmon Beauty. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/133783/
lol. the ooooh was for the phygelius but when i saw NEW and YARROW i just had to know. it is beautiful. which phygelius did you get?
The one I've been trying to find... Croftway Coral Princess. I'm a bit annoyed, though. I hunted everywhere for that plant... even wrote the wholesaler who grows it... trying to find someone who sells it. All they could tell me was Big Dipper. Well, Big Dipper has a minimum order AND expensive shipping. But I really wanted the plant, so I placed an order anyway. And now, of course, it's spring and a lot of people have it.
Oh, well. I'm glad to have the yarrow too. It will look pretty next to your Paprika, don't you think?
The rodgersia is an experiment for my dad's shade garden. I didn't spend enough killing plants in there last year. :)
lol. my joke is my back garden...i named it THE GARDEN THAT TEXAS CAN'T KILL.
what are you saying......"lots of people have it?". like where? locally? the tongue is hangin' out of the mouth again like i got money to go buy another plant. right now i am trying to buy some crocosmia from out of england. like i got the money to do that. lol. or the mums. like i had the money to do that.
Nah, I've just seen it around on other mail order sites. I think Garden Crossings has it, and I saw it a couple of other places.
I got my first one at Calloway's last spring. They would not order a replacement for me, but they may get it in again this year. They had the cream-colored one in stock several times.
I haven't forgotten about sharing it. This little guy is too small to propagate yet. But, it has a nice root system, so hopefully it'll grow enough this summer.
Dennis, that is a great assortment of plants! For some reason, the Rock Penstemon hasn't survived for me....I'm not sure why. But I really love the look of it.
well don't buy the yellow one until you talk to me. the one i got from jess in new mexico is looking real good plus i sowed some seeds of a pale yellow one. they may be the same but i got the seeds elsewhere. anyway the plant i have was substantial when jess sent it so it may be divisible.
I'm going to try the Rock Penstemon in a container. It seems to be the pickiest of the bunch, from what I've read. I'll try it against an east facing wall, and see how it likes that. :)
Hopefully things warm up and dry out enough to start some planting tomorrow...
Dennis
Dennis, I've seen that in one location in the wild, on a roadcut going up vertically. It looked like almost pure rock it was growing out of, but maybe there's some kind of soil back behind the rocks. But anyway, that explains the name they call it.
Has anyone ever been to the Dallas Arboretum plant sale? If so, how is it?
It happens to be on my dad's birthday this year and I'm thinking of taking him. My parents moved down to Dallas from Detroit a little over a year ago. My dad really likes gardening, but he isn't so familiar with Texas plants and hasn't yet moved to far beyond crape myrtles and lantana and the stuff you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. I thought I might even take him to the class they have on the Friday night before the sale, that would let us into the sale that night instead of having to wait until Saturday.
Dennis
oh, dennis, i didn't even know they held such a thing. i also heard that the heard museum has a plant sale in april. now on this arboretum one.......when is your dad's birthday? lol.
brumley's in dallas is having an open house on sun. around 1 pm i think. dawn and i are going to go. hope to see some of you there.
