How far away do willows need to be planted from springs, wells, and earth bottom pond? I just bought two, but I am beginning to worry about the roots getting into all kinds of places:water pipes running to the house, a spring, a well, the septic tank, and a 40' diameter earth bottom pond. Should I take them back and wait to buy a weeping cherry? Please advise me.

Gloria, I love a beautiful weeping willow, but of the two places I had them, in PA (z6) and Orlando (z9), they proved to be a problem as they matured. The PA tree was already about 20 years old when we bought our house. The roots grew under the driveway and broke it in several places. It wasn't so much of a problem, but it was unsightly. The FL tree we planted from a 5 gallon pot. Being close to to a lake, it literally grew several feet a year and looked like it might undermine our pool deck after about 7 years. The pool deck was about 15' from the base of the tree. We kept an eye on it for another year and finally cut it down.
