Can you grow Hyacinth Beans in a container?

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I know they get quite tall and heavy, but could you plant them in a container and then train them up a sturdy trellis or fence? I have 5 plants growing (from seed) in a container that is about 10" square (below). I want to put then outside when it is warm enough (well, I have to, they would take over the house!), but I want to have some in a contianer in a spot that would be hard to till up, but there is a good bit of fefnce for it to run wild on. Thanks! Jennifer

A friend of mine grew them in 5 gallon pots at each porch support successfully. In the hot part of summer they needed water twice a day, but they bloomed well and looked pretty. The bigger the pot, the better I think.

I actually grew them in smaller than 5 gallon pots last year and they did very well.

One of those big pots that WalMart has started carrying, with the reservoir bases/saucers, might help with the watering issue... a tablespoon of polymer moisture crystals in that 5 gallon pot would help a lot, also.

My Mother only grew them in big pots on her patio, hers were beautiful too.
