I have some that were planted in the ground. They died down over the winter, and are now starting to send up shoots. So according to them, it is time.

It's 62 degrees right now. It's suppose to get down to 39 tonight. But in your house, the elephant ears will think it's time to grow. Good luck. If you have any problem with yours, let me know and I'll dig you up some of mine and send you a couple. Mine get really huge. See them flanking the boardwalk. I just moved them over by that old wooden bench. They were trying to block the boardwalk.

I am crossing my fingers that my two come back this year.. left them in the ground with mulch. We did have some snows and temps down in the low 20's off and on through the winter. Crossing my fingers and watching every day. Those by the boardwalk are very pretty .. I can imagine them getting big. There was a HUGE stand of EE's down the street from me when I lived in Los Angeles.. I bet a single ear was as tall as me... 5'6".... it was impressive.

Pam That is really nice of you thanks. I did go on vacation to Virgina and North Carolina and picked up a fewmore EE. I think someone said 17 more days till spring and I am hoping that buy the time they get leaves it will be warm to keep them out side,
The one that I grew in a pot last year is doing good and it has another ball on the side I am hoping that is a good sign. It looks like great place as they need lots of water. This is what it looks like a couple of weeks ago and if you look in the tree by the V there is a squirl with a coffee cup that was draged up by him after I couldn't get a good picture I went and brought a new Camra Boy I am a BAD speller

5'6' is really big. I'll see how big these get this year. They've only been planted for a year, and then I moved them.

That is so funny that the squirrel put a coffee cup in the tree. I love to watch the wildlife outside. Here is a picture I didn't have time to aim. I had to point the camera while it was hanging on my neck and click. I didn't know for sure if I got it or not until I got home. We were out in East Bay heading home at the time.

if you live in a cold climate -or havae cold winters you need to bring them in right? so if you bring them in each winter they will never get really big because you keep needing to start over? i am asking not telling because i would like to give them a try

You can buy really big elephant ears bulbs that are bigger than your hand. Buy and plant this kind, not the little 2 or 3 inch ones. Then, I would think, no matter where you live, you'll get huge ones during the middle or end of Summer.
Just my thoughts on getting big ones to grow.

I just bought a HUGE EE bulb. It's about 7" long and 4" across. Can't wait to plant it!

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

Yeah! Plant it in a huge pot, give it some liquid fertilizer, spread a little time release fertilizer around it, then just keep it watered.
Send pictures as it gets bigger and bigger.
Yeah!

ok--i get it now--buy the biggest bulbs--and i did see them for about 6 dollars--and they do not need to be dormant over the winter but can continue to grow in the house--right?

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes. By the way, that bulb cost $4.96 at Home Depot.
