Can you help me????

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have found 2 brugmansia on ebay that I am thinking about getting, can you tell me anything about these two brugs?

Jamaican Yellow and Santa Rosa

I only have 1 and it is Whiskers. I brought it into the house last week (from the GH) and started feeding it. I lost my two variegated ones last winter. A cold front came in before I could get them into the GH.

I don't think Dave's auction is going to be opening up real soon, cause I would rather buy from a DG'er then an unknown.

I have both and both are great growers. I would be careful about who I buy them from however as there are some that are not very reputable. I bought some last year and so far only one has bloomed and it was totally the wrong plant.

Does these two have a good scent?

One of the sellers has over 2000 feedbacks with a 99.4% positive
The other has 706 feedback with a 99.7 positive

I still have a few days I am really only considering right now.

There are some questions about Jamaican Yellow being the true plant. See this thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/803977/

I can send you Maya for postage.

2pugdogs, I received an answer to my questions about Jamaica Yellow from the Registrar of ICRA, as you can see in ZZs link to my question. Following Tom's link to photos of what Jamaica Yellow should look like, most of the Jamaica Yellows being sold on eBay are not Jamaica Yellow. The plant listed in featured items at the beginning of the Brug list on eBay has the form of the true JY but the color doesn't look right and I have never bought from that seller. I have bought from the Seller of Santa Rosa and have been satisfied enough that I have bought from him/her several times, but the plants are small for what you pay. I've bought from that seller only if I can't find the plant anywhere else.

Santa Rosa can be purchased from JT Sessions at: http://www.countrygdn.com/catalog6.html
His plants are larger and reasonably priced.

Logee's Jamaica Yellow could be the true JY. Be aware that their plants are small for the price you pay, but it's something you have to live with when you can't get a certain plant anywhere else.

Joyce, the cuttings you sent me are ready to pot up to gallon containers. Yea!

Thanks Betty and to all of you for your help.

If you can't find it or decide not to order it off E-bay a college by my house (UCR) has plant sells twice a year. The Spring plant sell happens the first weekend of April. They have a lot of cool plants they sell there and the prices aren't bad. So far I plan to go, so if you don't find one I could probably pick it up for you.

Brugs they have this year are 'Betty Marshall', 'Shredded White', 'Frosty Pink', 'Jamaican Yellow' and Brugmansia candida 'Double White'
Thats the only place I have bought mine. One of them from a few years back now stands about 12 feet tall.

newbie_I will get back with you in about a week sounds very interesting.

Sounds like a plan.

Linda, I know Maggi has a number of Brugs to ship to you as soon as it warms up a bit. I will PM you a list of what we have and you can see if there is anything else you are interested in. I know we have Peaches and Cream that we got from you. It makes a good basket plant.

Thanks Ken, you just made my day. The weather man didn't forcast the weather correctly one evening and a frost came in and totally wiped out my P&C and Maya. I had taken some cutting but someone wasn't watching over my shoulder to good and they turned to mush. I was totally sick. Because I had both of them for about 3 years and really loved them.

Hi there. I have been wanting a Brug for a few years and I even bought the book that was made for all the Brug freaks on Dave's a few years back. Well this is gonna be the year I don't let it slip by without at least trying! Can anyone tell me a good Or a Few first ones to try? I have a greenhouse to over winter however I see some folks have luck with them in zone 7 comming back. Color doesnt matter, smell would be great. From what I have read on the forum if I get cuttings now and pot them that they will bloom this year. Yes Size does matter. I was also amazed as I was reading the sticky that Dave put up. Can someone enlighten me on HOW Brug people hate each other? Im clueless!

Hello Weedlady, I grew up in Azle but have moved to east Texas just north of Tyler. We are in a group that has a round-up every Spring and Fall. This Spring it will be in Arkansas and in south east Texas this Fall. You can always load up on Brugs at swaps.

The problem with Brug org. is usually a power problem. Things have changed in the last few years. I am a member of several but still love Dave's because Brugs are not the only plants I like.

Weedlady if you get them right now there is a chance they could bloom this year, but for most brugs the chances are slim in zone 8a unless they're grown perfectly. Next spring is a better bet unless you buy established plants. Brugmansia arborea is an exception that will usually bloom from seed in one season, but if you are in the hotter parts of Texas they suffer in the heat.
That hate-each-other thing might have been a little bit of exaggeration, there was really just a few individuals causing trouble, but Ken is right, things are much more cordial now. :^)

Hi everyone you mentioned the arborea ...could anyone who has grown these give me some information on their requirements? I have quite a few but this is my first growing from seed experience,
they are about 2/3 ft high at the moment and I notice quite a difference in their growth habit and size compared to the hybrids ...should they receive more shade? ...are they lusty feeders? and do the cuttings strike as easily as the others. Will they cross with others? I know they don't need crossing, but can I ?and would it be worthwhile to try?
Any info would be most gratefully received ...thankyou ...Autumn here temp of 84F. :)
