Can you hatch a tiny egg from chicken?

Woodsville, NH

One of marans hens laid a tiny brown egg today and I was wondering if it would hatch out? If it did hatch, would it be a banty version of its parents or grow to full size? Has anyone hatched a tiny egg from a chicken? I will post a pic tomorrow, the batteries needed recharging.

depends on how big it is some pullet eggs can if they have the yolk inside as long as the egg has room for baby to grow. some are to little and just have white part so won't hatch. i've not tried it yet but was gonna come spring when i get more of them just for the fun of it to see what hatches. any i've cracked from my young layers have always had the yolk and been fertile. from my understanding if they do they are runts of the hatch.

Thanks! I usually blow out the odd eggs..super big, odd shaped or tiny and all have had yokes. This one came from a marans who has been laying since fall. I have been getting huge eggs from the gals so maybe one decided she had had enough! LOL I already put in the closet and have been turning it. So stayed. (chicks are still hatching! I am going to get the dried ones and post pics)

We had a smaller size egg hatch last summer. The chick was soo tiny and cute, she was noticeably smaller than the other chicks. She is doing fine now at about 8 months she weighs about 3-1/2 pounds. I attatched a picture of her with another chick. If I have a picture of her now I'll post one of those too.

Here is a recent picture of her on the deck having a snack.

Is she still smaller than the others??? Or did she catch up? I had a blk australorp i thought was a bantam as a chick....but after about 3-4 months, she caught up to the others. I bet she came from a small shell too then.

She is about the same size as the other young hens we have. I think she may be a little smaller, but not enough to really tell. She is spoiled rotten though.
We had a black australorp that was smaller as well. We though she might have been crossed with a bantam. Her feet were even noticeably smaller than the other hens.

i am glad you asked this. Just when i thought i was through incubvating eggs, one of my OEG Blue Wheatnes laid one today! much smaller than usual, almost as small as a quail egg. well, in it went, i just happened to have ONE spot left in the egg turner...

I think it would depend on whether or not it really had all it's eggy goodness inside of it. You know, now that I think about it, we have another thread going on around here about a runty chick. I wonder if s/he was a tiny egger?

all the tiny eggs i have ever broke open were all there, except a pea sized one that seemed all yolk...

I have broken open tiny eggs, and only once had one that didn't have a yolk in it. It did have the nucleus, but no yolk.

Well my lil dark brown egg didn't develop. I just candled all the eggs and it was clear. I am not giving up though, any tiny egg laid I will fire up the incubator to try again!
So far I have 12 banties, 7 marans and one guinea that are doing good. We will find out in two weeks what hatches.

Awwwwww, so sorry Lora, I will be candling my eggs on Monday. Hopefully we will have some started. I'm getting anxious, too.

i just read [are y'all tired of me reading yet?] that after six weeks there is little or no difference in size, after hatching out smaller or larger birds from smaller or larger eggs...

i have a half Jersey Giant/Black Australorp that was in a pullet shell. he came out with a twisted neck and can't stand up. will keep an eye on him. i think he was too crowded, any ideas?

We have a Jersey Gi X Roo with 2 Bantam Cuchin hens...the last hatching was on June 30 2007 three days after we got 50 Special Black chicks..the 2 hens told all of them and the Roo helped. The 2 little Cuchin/JG hatchlings were half the size of the Blacks...but they held their own... They joined the whole flock in July and at that point they could walk under their brooder siblings! They were so cute we kept them and called them Elmer and Ella our little chicken elves. Elmer became a randy roo and really was well received by the Browns however, the size factor was a difficult factor as the accommodating hen would raise her tail and flip him off...LOL...what frustration for the teenager Roo! Ella joined the flock of the RIR Roo and started laying eggs ... 1 oz to 1 1/4 oz eggs daily. They are completely normal and she is sitting now on 7 or 8 eggs. She is still the tiniest hen in comparison to the others, but she is the fiestiest one! No one crosses her! Elmer has finally reached a fairly good size and has a bevy of Browns that follow him around faithfully...and he can do it! LOL I can hardly wait to see Ella's babies...or who ever's babies they are.
