Dutch Crocus, Spring Crocus 'Pickwick' (Crocus vernus)

Nice bulb! Oh zone envy here! =)

Thanks much for you kind comments about my blooms.

Yes, I know about zone envy! You folks in TX can grow a lot of things I'd love to have but can't. One is the oxblood lilies on your webpage, in fact. Love them. I grew up in S. TX, where they grow very well. I planted some in my mother's yard 50 years ago--and they're still there, although they seem to "migrate" to other places in the yard. Birds, maybe?

I think they would be hardy in your area too--they are hardy at PDN in North Carolina.

I'd think rodents, I know they can easily pull themselves down in the ground 2' or greater here (the Rhodophiala bifida--not the rodents). If she did have a seed fertile strain (and I've seen them) they could have easily reseeded in other parts of the yard also. Rhodophiala's, Zephyranthes', and Habranthus' can reseed themselves sometimes very nicely in the garden depending on the species and strain.

I go thru the PlantFiles pictures everday just to look at the bulbs that won't grow here (and drool--lol). Please keep posting your pictures! You are one great bulb grower. I'll try to give you some "eye candy" later in the season on some rain lilies and other stuff.

Thanks, Debbie. I may just try those oxblood lilies here!

I think that is cv 'Pickwick' because it appears to have all striped petals. cv 'King of the Striped' has 3 mostly purple inner petals and 3 striped outer petals. These two cultivars are often confused. But maybe this is just a variation. Do some of the other flowers have mostly purple petals or do they all look like this?

Well, you could be right. I call it 'King of the Striped' because I don't think I ever planted any striped cultivars other than that one. In recent years, I've ordered all my crocus from Van Engelen or John Scheepers, and 'King' seems to be the only striped they carry--at least now. But it's certainly possible that this is a stray from a mix ordered earlier--from Scheepers or from another supplier.
