A dinasaur!!!!! I took him outside. He was in the sunroom.
Look who found my terrarium!
Cool!!!!!
Oh, I love those little Anole lizards! They eat bugs! They are all over in my screened pool enclosure as well as out in the yard. I am constantly rescuing them from the cats. And, when we have cold nights I drag orchids and hoyas inside and the little critters jump out. They are so fast ... I try to catch them before they get behind furniture ... before they become play toys for one of the cats!
Oh yeah, and these little critters don't have teeth ... they eat bugs whole! If you catch one they will grab ahold with their gums and hang on for dear life but you don't feel anything except a little suction! I really detest disgusting crawling creatures, but I adore these little guys!
Yes, they are good to have. I have seen them hunt and eat a ROACH in my herb garden. He SKIPPED down the path with it. I was laughing!
Yep, many years ago my niece was visiting and she was swimming in the pool whileI was watering plants on the pool deck. I moved a pot on the deck and thousands of ants came swarming out ... no sooner did I move it and a lizard came running scoffing up all those ants so fast! My niece screamed ... thought it was really gross! I was so happy ... never thought about what the lizards ate. Hubby once told me they ate those huge palmetto bugs (roaches) and I said yeah, right ... those bugs are bigger than some of those lizards! Well, I have since been out in the yard and seen lizards grabbing and swallowing huge palmetto bugs!! I love them .... I would even pay money to have them around since they keep bugs away!
Well if that isn't just the neatest picture. He just blends right in.I really wish we had them here!
Oh Nancy, y'all don't have the little lizards? They are just the cutest little things. We call these little guys "Chemeleons" because they turn brown or green. I always thought it was to blend into the surroundings while hiding but read awhile back that they turn brown when stressed out. I don't know that I agree with that because the hundreds of them we have around here most always look brownish in color, no matter the time of day. Only seem to be green for short periods. I love it when I see them in their green "dress"!
I had no idea pet stores sold them as pets! I googled and found some info: http://www.kingsnake.com/anolecare/
I also found this site saying they live from Virginia south to Texas so I guess thats why you don't see them in Nebraska! And, I guess maybe we have two different kinds cause it says there are green and brown anoles. Interesting facts: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/ReptilesAmphibians/Facts/FactSheets/Anole.cfm
OK Now that is just too neat Lin.Its so amazing.Oh how I wish we had them here. All we have up here are frogs, toads and snakes..and every once in a great while for a touch of excitement a salamander is found in a basement..LOL..Thanks for all the info on them.I think I have seen them at the pet store here.I am going to have to take a look next time I am there : )
I had no idea they were even sold as pets! I read that you have to feed them live crickets! eeek ... don't know if I could do that!
oops..scratch that idea then..I don't think I could touch a live cricket..lol...
I found a brown anole in with a plant shipment from Florida at work last year. He was SO tiny- just a baby. I brought him home and we bought the whole setup from a pet store to put him in. We also bought the pinhead crickets to feed him ( not that bad!) He just 'passed away' last week unexpectedly. He was so cute. We called him Ernie From the Everglades. Don't know if he was missing something else from his diet or what happened.
Oooh ... that is so sweet! Diane, do you work at a garden center?
I just adore those little anoles. Their eggs look just like perlite, and how I know that is a few years back I was emptying out a pot where a plant was half dead. I had my gardening gloves on and had dirt and perlite in hand and apparently squished a piece of perlite (egg) and there was a perfectly formed teensy, teensy baby lizard! I was so sad cause I caused the poor baby's demise. But, I redeemed myself last year when I rescued a little lizard from one of the cats. I thought it was too late, the thing seemed dead. Usually when I get them away from a cat, they have a little life left and the minute you open your fingers they take off. This little one just layed there, eyes shut, not breathing. So I began to gently rub it and talk to it and within a few minutes the little guy began to move a little and a couple of minutes later it was fine .... I put it out front on a plant and it scurried away!
Ahhhh sweet story Lin!
Yeah I work in a nursery. Mom & Pop type place.
Never really see lizards much around though I've been told house geckos sometimes are found. My husband found one outside our house late last year. We tried to save him but for a friend for Ernie but he didn't make it. They don't usually make it through our winters. One of the girls I work with has a degree in zoology. She's where I got the info from. She said she usually feeds the house geckos to her snakes....I was appalled!!!!
AAAAK! She feeds the poor geckos to her snakes? Poor little geckos! I saw on another forum yesterday a photo someone posted of a bunch of newborn mice .... she said she feeds them to her snake! Yuck!
Sally,
How cute is he...LOLOL Aw you put him in the cold? Poor baby...LOLOLOL
Hugs,
Susan
Well, not too many snakes eat burgers and fries...it's just nature; they're both predator and prey.
COLD!?!?! Ha, it is not cold. Much more to eat outside. He is happy, he is with all the other lizards again.
Sally, you would never make it out here in the country........every time I get ready to take a bath, they are lounging in my tub.........i don't know how that many get in the house, but they do live here!
gail
Two of my grandchildren think it is wonderful that they can catch so many crickets, frogs and lizards at my house.............they build a terrarium for them.........but of course their dad makes the children let 'them' go home to their families at night.
ha, no, I would not like critters in the house. I do like them, but I like them outside. My only critters inside are my little parrot and doggie.
What an AWESOME picture Sally! How neat!
We don't have those little lizards here but I think they are so cute.
I can't imagine finding one in my terrarium! I think I would do the "I'm freaking out" dance *lol* But he looks so happy and content in there! Great shot!
Kim
Those little lizards are here in Al.There pretty cool to watch but I like them outside too.I found one in my closet last year.Still can't figure out how he got in there.LOL.
