Does anyone have a tried and true favorite source for buying wormies for the bluebirds? Last year I got some locally (they came in a little can) and they were pretty gross. I've seen them at Duncraft and WBU-does anyone have a favorite brand/seller?
Thanks!
Deb

Thanks, Pelle! I hope you're feeling better!
Hey Pelle,
I read on the site for mealworms to keep them in wheat bran or meal. Do you think a whole wheat flour would be okay? I have an old 5# bag.
thanks
You might want to ask Dave (2ndcousinDave) about that; I'm not sure.
I highly recommend Sunshine Mealworms... it takes a little patience to get the mealies off the newspaper they're wrapped in, but once you get the hang of it (I tear the pages into little strips over a big rubbermaid container rather than trying to work with the whole page at once) it's not that bad.
When you order, tell them you're feeding bluebirds and they'll give you a discount!
I pack mine in oats but here's something I found by Googling "packing mealworms in flour"... so Mrs. Ed, it looks like you can make use of your old bag o' flour!
"... Meal worms need a good quality bedding. By quality we mean clean fresh and a bedding made of wheat bran or whole wheat flour. The bedding will also be the food your mealworms eat."

I am wondering if you can use these to feed the Robins? The ground here will be frozen for awhile and I would like to put out something for the Robins to eat on their way through. Any suggestions?
To be honest I'm not sure; I'm wondering if the giant ones would be okay.
They also eat berries and fruit when the worms are scarce.
I've got robins gobbling up mealies right alongside the bluebirds. Of course, you'll need to put the mealies in a dish, not on the ground for the robins... but they can't resist 'em. I've even googled about robins eatling mealworms (because this is the first year I've had them do it at my house) and learned that they can be trained to eat them from your hands, they like 'em so much!
OOOO, that sounds like a fun project! Training Robins, that is.
LOL Dave! That first pic is a hoot and that second one is...well...just wonderful!
I never really thought about feeding the robins . . .if we keep getting so much snow, I might have to go ahead and get some meal worms a little early and give them a little snack. Thanks for sharing the great photos!
LOL! What a piggie.
