Those are one-day old White Rocks and Buff Orpington standards, eating with a five day old Serama bantam. The standards look like monsters!!
Standard vs. Bantam
So who is bullying who? Just kidding, but my Orpingtons were so sweet they made my Australorps seem sassy (Ausies are not aggressive by any stretch) My current Orpington just looks bewildered when the Marans and RIR are having temper tantrums.
I love those little bantams!!!! I hope to someday add a few Buff Orp Bantams to my bantam coop.
Can the bantams and standard size be kept in the same coop or do they need to have separate coops. Right now I just have my Khaki Campbells and no chickens until the end of the month when my order comes in.
We are building a 30' X 30' pen for them when it's warm enough for them to be outside. Since they will be together since a day old can they stay together? Or should I even separate them as chicks too? This will be my first experience with bantams.
This is my only experience with having the two together, but it seems to be fine. No more bullying, everybirdy is getting along fine. Actually, the bantams seem to be at the top of the pecking order right now. I don't know what will happen once the standards start to grow...Scott
I have found the same as Maineiac, my silver sebright roo Sylvester rules the roost among the chickens,
Marshall, a cuckoo marans who towers over him, runs away from him. We did have a short period where everyone was fighting, they must have hit that age and then everything settled down. Now they just ruffle up and jump but no fighting. The Guineas who share the house too will charge and run off anyone or anything! They all roost together at night though!
I've also had that same experience. My girls have been raised together, so they are used to birds of different sizes. I know that some people have a really tough time with introducing new birds, but we never had. My flock currently has 13 silkies ( 3 roos, 10 hens) 4 bantams girls, 7 standard hens, 1 standard roo and one chicken that is in the middle, sizewise.
I keep everything from silkies and sebrights to polish and brahmas. All together, and all fine. The only time I have a problem is the first two to three weeks after introducing a new batch. I love the look of my rainbow flock.
Sounds like I can keep them together! My DH is happy about that-we won't have to build another hen house! I'm getting antsy waiting for mine to come! Another 23 days!
hang in there!
Thanks! It helps to see everyone else's 'babies'!
I just relaized, ours are due right around Easter. how perfect is that???
Couldn't time that any better!
how many days left?
Too Many!!
well, couldn't help myself, had to fill htos espaces in the bator. so no we have two dozen in for April 7th!
It's a good thing we have orders for our eggs as I was thinking the same thing, TF. But, I will be a good girl and wait and see what we get this time first.
Told DH we might get some orpingtons because he is saying these chicks are too small to be good eating when the time comes. (heh, heh, sneaky, ain't we)
We ended up cancelling our order from Ideal due to a miscommunication between DH and myself!(my fault! I thought he wanted to put a hold on them for a bit). So we decided to go with Meyer and ordered 19 Buff Orps(15 poults 4 roos) and 6 straight run Black Silkies. And we are getting Pekin ducklings from our local Agway. The chicks are coming April 2 and the ducklings will be in the second week of April. Not sure if I should get some buff orp roos from Ideal to keep the bloodlines different in case we are lucky enough to eventually get some home-grown chicks!
granny I like your way of thinking!! lol!
Well, we have 32 eggs in the bator, and I just informed DH that if they hatched, we will get a few Buff Orpingtons to go along with them (they are Black Astralorps). He said okay to that.
