NPA Plant Sale

Apparently I didn't have enough fun yesterday. I decided to go to the NW Perennial Alliance Hellebore Exhibit and plant sale at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens just briefly today "so I could say I did". The hellebore hybrids were beautiful and there were many there - they prices weren't the worst, but not the best. I did pick up a Helleborus Orientalis and a few other woodland treasures:

I went today too and must have missed the Uncinia uncinata ‘Red’. That looks great!

Apparently I missed a really great sale!! Tell me which plant in my garden you yearn for and I will hold a division of it hostage until that Uncina is big enough to divide. Very nice choices you made there! Was it terribly crowded?

JBuresh - when were you there? I wonder if I walked right by you. I was there from about 11:30 until 12:30, I think. One of the volunteer coordinators turned out to be someone I knew 10 years ago. I remembered her face, she remembered where I knew her from. Apparently I gave her a recipe and my name's on the card, so she thinks of me every time she makes it. That is SO funny. Anyway, I can check and see if she knows where to score some more Uncina.

It got crowded pretty crowded by noon and some plants were going pretty fast. I got one of the last of the pachyphragma. i'm looking forward to seeing it spread. It's native to Caucasus in Turkey.

If you call Squak Mountain Nursery, or Wells Medina they will order it for you, as long as they have a source.
I will be ordering quite a bit of this sedge and I will ask about a discount.

Glad you were able to go to the NPA sale & score, Kathy. It was a whirlwind day for me. I did get a couple things planted between housecleaning & arrival of guests. PHEW!

Kate - so glad you were able to get a few hours out. And I'll bet your house is looking better than mine right now. I'm trying to do a quick weekend cleaning, sweeping, scooping, washing, wiping, dusting in only a couple of hours tonight. Eeek!!

Looking at pictures and not so sure I didn't get Uncinia Uncinata 'Rubra', rather than red. The tag didn't say. This is definitely a brozny sedge. If that's the case, then no wonder you missed it, JB.

Also, my friend told me that there would be another sale (for those of you not in the NPA, who will probably get a notice) in April at North Seattle Community College. Not sure of the day, though.

Katye, sounds like the makings of a mini-coop for folks coming to the plant swap in April? :) I'd buy 10-15 plants if the cost were around $3.50. Bigdipper has it:

The 2008 NPA Spring Plant Sale will be held April 20, from 10 am to 3 pm, at , North Seattle Community College.

It was only $3 or $4. I think it's a 2 1/2" pot size. Is Big Dipper's larger?

Most of thiers are 3 inch pots. I bought a corydalis from them a few weeks ago. My best friend lives in Enumclaw and Big Dipper is only 15 minutes from here, I'm drawn to it like a magnet!

I've never been there, but I do like the name and their website. I'd love to go some time . . .

I want to go to Big Dipper Farm, too. I've driven by, but only after they'd closed. :(

Wind Poppy Farm & Nursery has the Uncinia Uncinata, too. They are wholesale, and sell to many nurseries.

Hi Pixy, Thankyou for the fish I love them and they were to nice to put in the pond. I bought a stock tand and put them in it in the nursery. They love it but I am on a mission for a solar areator. I think they need it. I need to put a few rocks in the bottom and and some more plants. Do you think they need some food? Thanks I love them Heidi

Hey, the stock tank is a great idea! I think it's a better idea than the pond. They will love it in the tank and be safer in there. If you put plants in, they don't need much food. They definitely do not need food just now. Just stick some water plants in there. Do you want a water lily or two? I'm dividing mine and I have one that is a bit out of control. You need underwater plants. If you put in underwater plants, they might be able to do without oxygenating the water, unless it is in full direct sun during the summer. Then you'll want to aerate. I have extra water plants, but not much that stays under water. Let me know. And you are welcome! I think there is a baby who slipped through the net still in my pond. I noticed an unknown fish swimming around in there last night. don't know where it came from.

Hi Pixy, I put the tank up by the check out stand. It is kind of pushed in where I was protecting the gunnera from the cold. I would love a water lily. I actually would love a lotus. I think those are col I might need to see if I can get some wholesale. They are very happy and I didn't think they needed any food. Valley Nursery the closest nursery with water plants might have some. But If you still want to get rid of a water lily I would love a chunk.

Scrappy doo is coming to visit today. I don't know if he is quite ready to meet the wild heathens.

well my new little buddy came to visit with his driver Rachel. He first met another person Heidi with her sweet precious and they went to the beach then he came out here and met the pack. He had such a good time and so did my group. Heidi

Heidi, I'll gladly bring you a water lily or two. It will be nice for them to have a home. I can't put them all back in the pond. I can't wait to see your new water garden with the fish!! Such a fabulous idea.

By the way, I learned on the pond forum that Walmart sells a cat litter that is 100% pure fired clay, so it is great for planting water plants without making a mess. The clay does not dissolve and cloud the water. It's the Special Kitty brand in the bag with the red letters. Cheapest stuff they have. What a deal compared to getting the 'aqua soil'.

Special Kitty-I used it last year. I even made a special trip just to get it. It's pretty hard to beat the price. It's a little cloudy when you first get it wet, but I think that's from loose dust. If you rinse it, it clears quickly. And, that stuff does not break down. I'd bet my cats would just hate it as litter, but for this it was pretty good.
