Last year was my first year gardening and I didn't really winter over anything properly. I knew that if I dug my Glad corms in the fall stuck them in a container and brought them inside I'd be able to replant them in the spring. I hadn't been aware that I was supposed to dry them, pack them in spagnum or peat moss then stick them some place cool like a basement or my fridge since I don't have a basement or a garage. Since I didn't do any of that I figured my corms would be a loss, not a big deal since I've already ordered somewhere around 300 Glad corms for the coming spring. I just got back from Costco where I ended up buying another 140 Glad corms, 120 Callianthus corms, and 10 Dahlia tubers. A friend had mentioned that the corms could be lethal to my cats if they got into them so I figured I'd just stored them in the 5 gal sealed bucket my presumably dead and/or rotted corms from last year were in. Imagine my shock when I opened it up and they've sprouted! Some of them have almost a foot of stem on them.
Er, what do I with them now? It's below 40 degrees outside right now so I can't plant them outside. As it is I hadn't planned on planting them for at least another month if not two. Can I pot them inside? The only thing is they're going to be stuck in a back bedroom, fairly sunny but indirect. I can't leave them where my cats can get to them because they will knock them over or dig them up. Help!?
Help? Glads are sprouting
As the glads are well into growth you would be best potting them up or they will suffer. It shouldn't harm them inside if they get some light from a window, you should get some early flowers!
It's best not to seal them inside anything, they need air circulation to dry. Mine are just sat on trays in the garage near a window, starting to shoot a little now. I only lost one to rot. As you don't have a garage you could try leaving them in the coldest place you have inside over winter, or buy another fridge, lol.
When you get all those flowers be sure to post some pics on the Gladiolus forum, we would love to see them! You have some work on planting all those, lol, good luck.
