2008 pictures of my pond

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Hyacinths bloomed earlier, but it's up today as well. The water lily has become a regular feature since two full years, continuously. I take the camera almost to water level and take this type of shots. We are all used to seeing shots taken from eye level and usally from a standing position. Some different angle.

Dino,
I guess you're still a bit warmer and more tropical then Florida. My lilies ae just waking up. It's either that or they are starved for food. I hate to get in the water to feed them in Jan-Feb and didn't do it last fall. It's time though to get busy and bring back the plants. My lotus corms are ready to be planted and I have some more lilies that need to go in the pond but I still need to buy some milk crates to get everything higher up. I notice that the deeper the lilies, the less growth and success I have.

Here's a couple shots of where I am today.

I had all this foam in the water which I think resulted from adding some bacteria but a little foam away had instant results as can be seen here.

Dinu, thank you once again for the wonderful pics of your pond. I really love that first one.

Fred, I am so glad to hear from you. Had not for some time. Your pond is just wonderful and the koi seem to really be happy there.

Oh Dinu! Giving me some major zone envy. You too Fred. Just beautiful. I would love to see any pics you'd show.

Yeah,
I'm still here. The pond has been taking a bit of a back seat (once the novelty wore off) as I have many other projects running. :-)

The fish are getting ever bigger and I wonder when they'll stop growing. Is there a limit? Got my rec room with the pool table, bar and 63" plasma all finished and now finishing up my library shelves. Tonight I watched 'a river runs thru it' on the big screen. They had some really big trout in that movie. Wonderful film.

Art, you say, "I would love to see any pics you'd show." I'm not sure what that means. I have pics galore out on my website at:

Thank you very much.

Fred,
Some lovely shots of a lovely place!! Thanks for sharing them here. The first shot is just beautiful. Fish naturally, look happy there in its abode. Well done.

Here is another shot I took some time back, with the house in the background.

The last few days of this pond... I have to abandon it... family situation [some of you are aware].... surrender the half of the property to brother... pond and garden exists in this half... I choose the other half to continue to live in.... moving to that half now.. now in the process... partition wall and all.. that is the gist of the story.

Now, having tasted the beauty of having a pond, I just could not think of not having a pond. I'm slowly moving plants to my new garden area which is on the opposite side of the property. I finally found a spot where I can still have a small pond, almost half the size of the one I enjoyed for 4 years. Here is the picture I took about a week back showing all the stone benches removed, plants moved away....rocks that decorated the pond also were moved.. it now presents a dull, bald look! Here is the place that gave me so much joy [sitting on my favourite stone bench] for hours on end. I hope that will continue soon when I get that new one dug up and have a new liner. Emptying the old one of all its content is a hectic job!

I had seen your thread about having to move things around. Sounds like you are going to be very busy my friend. From the garden perspective though you have a blank slate and a lot of opportunity. You were able to find out what worked and what did not in your other garden and now you can make some changes that you may not have been able to make before. Please consider adding a waterfall to the new pond. You would be amazed at what a difference it makes in your enjoyment of it. The sight and sound of the running water will be soothing for you and a magnet for desirable wildlife such as dragonflys, birds and frogs. It will also cut down on the breeding of misquitos. Please keep us up to date when you find the time. :^)

Waterfall... not now I think. I'll keep that item in mind though. I'm also a water-lover [not swimming] and so this can't be ruled out, may be postponed. Waterfalls suit for calm atmosphere. My house is situated on a busy road, the sound of the waterfall gets immersed in traffic noise [from 30ft. range!]. I'll see what I can do in the next couple of months to begin with, when all the energy gets focused into a smaller area to look after henceforth. Presently, lots of transplanting is in progress. Hopefully at least most of them will survive. The next on the agenda is the pond itself. I'm waiting for the workers to dig up the hole I had asked for.

If a waterfall is in the realm of a future possibility then remember to get a liner big enough to accomodate it now. Adding a piece of liner later for a waterfall in a way that's leak proof is difficult. Until you do install a waterfall you can always tuck the extra liner out of sight under rocks or soil. Then when you need it, it's there. Just pull it up and re-route your water outlet. It doesn't have to be a large waterfall to be enjoyable. Just a couple of rocks behind the liner and couple on top to cover the liner and there you have it. Instant gently splashing tranquility.

Thanks for the idea snapple45. Neat one at that!
