I'm growing b. candida and b. versicolor in soft peach and yellow. I'd like to add three new brugs next year - it seems to me that 'Ecuador Pink' is a dark pink - what would be everyone's suggestion for a coral/orange?
If you had to recommend to a relative brugmansia newbie 3 beautiful brugs to start with - which would they be? I'd like a pretty double as well in any color.
Recommendation for Deep Colors and a Double Brug
Where is everyone? Moi? I'd go for candida f. plena Angels Dream, for the double, Herrenhauser Garten for the double orange, culebra for the weirdness, and Georgenpalais for the scent. Oh, and the sanguinea Mobisu or Oroverde. That's more than three.
Brugman, KHT, Arlene, Barbara will all have a different opinion.
Liz, you have some good taste indeed. Personally, I would love to have seeds of a nice flava crossed to a nice arborea....but most of all, I like the aurea types....and the ones with intense fragrance. Have you noticed how small the aurea seedpods are in comparison with the other species?
The arborea white is blooming but the flava x arborea isn't. Trying to help but the plant isn't cooperating.
I've copied what you said about crossing the various species but what about color? Can you cross say a yellow with a pink?
yellow with pink-of course, species crosses are often of different colors. As a general rule, I almost always cross pink to yellow or pink to orange and as a general rule I generally always cross one species to another species or the one it least looks like, but you don't have to do this. You can cross pink to pink of the same species different hybrids if you want. Personally, I like to see hybrids with full pink and yellow or orange ribs-contrasting or blended colors....Hope that helps you Liz.
I think so - note the - Í think - I hand pollinated my fuzzy sanguinea to my tomato plant sanguinea and appear to have a seedpod happening. Tore out the corolla so it wouldn't rot. Started with those 2 because they happened to be blooming at the same time. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of that seedpod would you? Do I tie a label around the stems of the ones I try to cross?
Sanguinea to an arborea gives me a flava??
I now keep Q-tips at the ready.
Liz, which one is the seed bearer? That should be a stunning hybrid combination. Would love to take that one back to arborea. Vucanicola x sanguinea x arborea in that order would be exquisite. Simply divine. Perhaps crossing one more time to arborea and then back crossing to both parents.....
Sanguinea x arborea gives a flava, but I would still be most interested in Arborea x flava type crosses or the above if you are thinking of hybridizing some more. congrats on the possible seed pod. Post pictures when and if you can.
What kind of time frame are we talking about here? With all this crossing back and forth. I'm in my usual state of confusion.
About a 3 yr time frame I would say Liz, depending on your growing ability and provided you use the arborea as the seed bearer where possible.
Thanks for the suggestions! I have made notes and will look up some pics. I don't have much to trade (yet) - just the ones I listed but I'd be thrilled if anyone has any extras. I do grow lovely dahlias if anyone has interest in other species.....
CindyB - bet you won't be able to stop at three - This time next year I hope you tell us just how many you really have.
