Does anyone know where I can get a few (up to 5) Blue laced red wyandotte females? I'm so in love with this color scheme and can't seem to find someplace that will only send a few. Thanks!
BLRW Chicks?
This is (I think) one of the BLRW chix I got today from McMurrays. They're gorgeous!! They arrived 4 days early!!! Were supposed to ship tomorrow, P.O. called today, the box said birds hatched yesterday, priority mail must move on Sundays? Nice of them to call me so the little ones didn't have another lonely cold night at the P.O..
oh, that is a beaut!
Thanks, Scott, i will be looking for that when mine hatch...
maineiac, finally ordered mine from McMurray's. Hope they are as cute as yours. Can you tell the sex? Hoping for girls, hope springs eternal!
Feathersite shows chix pix of the blrw. According to that, it looks like the males may have darker faces, but I can't tell the difference yet.
Congrats on your order, I hope they are healthy and happy when they get here. When are they being delivered?
maineiac, expecting my blrw's on 3/31 along with black australorps, buff orpingtons, speckled sussex, keeping 2 of each and the rest go to friends. how are your blrw's ? Can you tell the sex yet? Can't wait for mine, the nursery is waiting and ready!
They are not feeling well right now. For some reason most of the BLRW and a couple of the Silver-pencilled W's seem to be ill, they can't stand up, or if they do they are "woozy" acting. They will eat and drink if you put them near it, but won't seek it out on their own. It has me a bit worried, as they are my favorites, such nice chicks. They have been put into chicken ICU, so they don't have to compete with the mob. Keeping my fingers crossed that they pull through. They have grown as well as any, with the exception of the white rocks - which have surpassed all the others. No - I can't tell the sexes apart. I am going to order more when I find another source to diversify the bloodlines. Hope you have great success with your chicks when they arrive. Keep us posted...Scott
try some ACV in their water... hope they are OK...
What is ACV? I have that quick-chik that I have been putting in the water. One died overnight, but one looks better, and is able to get on its feet to get a drink and eat.
so sad, hope they're ok! Let me know. Don't know what ACV is either. Don't know where else to get them. Nice site is bluelacedred.com but he wants $175 for 15 chicks. Ouch!
ACV = apple cider vinegar. Natural, not pasturized. You can get it at a natural foods store if you have one in the area. TamaraFaye is the one to ask about it. She has been using it for quite a while. Seems to raise their immune systems.
Thanks all. I have a co-op store close by that should have it. Will get some and try to save them.
sorry i wasn't here, mainiac, thanks GG for answering that question. it only takes a tiny bit in their warter everytime, they get used to it, and there are many benefits to using it. i was involved in a study before i ever got chickens, using ACV with garlic as a regimen for guineas. as part of a natural worming process.
i don't remember where you got yours from, but all kinds of htings can cause a young chick to die. genetic things you have no control over. just try to stay calm and no tworry yourself over it. and always keep good stuff on hand. colloidal silver is another. i saved a rooster from strictnine poisoning with it.

Thanks for the advice. They came from McMurrays. I trust they will be okay, besides that I never expected all of them to live. So should the ACV be part of a regimen, like every time I change their water?
You're very welcome, TF. I am going to get some ACV and start my girls on it this year, too. I haven't had any problems with them, but it sometime pays to be prepared.
yes. every time i change the water, i rinse good with a clean sponge. after adding water and mineral supplement [which i don't use later on], i add about a jig or two per gallon.
i am being lazy about it now. usually i have minced garlic in it... i bought the garlic, haven't done it yet...
Here is a site I think may be of interest. This is where my next chix are coming from. $50 for 12 (18) eggs including shipping. http://www.sterlingcenterfarm.com/
maineiac,
I got all excited when I saw your post because I live in NYS. Just emailed them to see if they would sell chicks. If I can buy locally so much the better.

Regarding the sick chicks from McMurrays...
I just heard today that a few hatcheries including McMurrays have some problems and their chicks are dying after shipping. AE-Avian encephalomyelitis
I would contact them and tell them yours are sick. Apparently it is wide spread.
If you have other chickens, keep them isolated!

Does this site illustrate what is meant by the light and dark phase of BLRW? Does anyone understand the genetics of the difference?
http://poorridgeranch.com/chickenpage2.html
Catscan, go to www.bluelacedred.com they have a good description.
We used to use the word "blue" to signify the dark blue birds, and "splash" for the ligher laced birds.
Now, I use dark blue and light blue, because technically, if the lacing is not "blue" then the bird shouldn't be called a blue laced red wyandotte.
The goal in breeding them together is to produce the "medium" blue lacing, which is suppose to be a pigeon type blue and the red should be a brick or mahogany red.
There are so many variations out there, that its going to be quite a while before any approved standard will be reached.
But, the "light blue or splash" birds bred to each other act like the splash in any breed because they always produce the lighter colors.
Eventually when we get that medium color we are working towards, tthat color will be the only ones used for breeding, hopefully they will breed true.
I hope this helps. Yes, you can tell at birth if they are going to be light or dark as that picture that was posted shows. Usually, if they are very light at hatch, then they will probably end up with white lacing, and should not bue used for breeding. I only keep the light blue chicks that have good blue fluff. If its light at hatch, then it will just get lighter.
Its been my experience, that breeding the really dark, or black laced birds ends up with too much orange and should also not be used for breeding.
Here is a photo of one of my dark blue hens with the pigeon blue lacing

Glad you made it to this thread Sue. Is that last pic one of the breeders? Beautiful colors...
Hi Sue, I think I see the appeal now---those are beautiful BLRW. How do you find the Marans temperament?
Marquisella, would you sell day old chicks if I came to pick them up? Had an order in to MMH but now I'm scared and am canceling on Monday. I'm in NJ. Thanks.
Well - I just ordered BLRW eggs from Sue. She is shipping them in the a.m. Can't wait to get them heated up!
