Is bone meal ok to use as ferilizer on clematis after a hard prune or do you still suggest rose food or tomatoe food?
Please clarify for me for I have been doing some reading and I am a bit confused. If I have a pruning type 3 where it gets cut down every spring - is that the time to fertilize?
Now if I have a type 2 that only gets minimal pruning after flowering - do I wait until after flowering in the spring before I fertilize?
I get so confused when to fertilize what clematis!!! Help please!

I only use Bonemeal When I plant my clematis..You should use either Rose Fertilizer or Tomato Fertilizer..both have a higher middle number on the N-P-K ratio and that is what you want for blooms!!..I fertilize ALL my clematis the same time that I hard prune my pruning group 3's and give them alfalfa tea as well!!..Jeanne
Thanks so much for the info!!! Now I have one one question.....do you only fertilize that once? Would that be enough for the summer.....our growth season starts from the end of May to end of Sep.
I give my a handful at time of pruning and then when I hard prune my group 3's and 6 weeks later a handful of 13-13-13 and that is it for people with shorter growing seasons..Me, I have a very long growing season and can easily get 2-3 bloom period from my pruning group 3's by hard pruning after it has finished its flush of blooms...Jeanne

I have a friend who does a foliar feed at 1/2 the recommended rate every week! Her stuff looks great.
I was using Osmocote but recently found some great prices on "Wet" fertilizer. So this year i will try it and let you all know if my Clem's are doing better!! Some of mine have been very puny!
I am going to work at the compost in the soil and this foliar feeding and see what a difference i can make in the flower production!
