Dont mean to brag, just really excited by the new bulbs i have gotten today. got a nice clump of daffodils that i think are "Butter and Eggs", some snowflakes, iris and (best of all) two large bags full of Byzantine glads! i could have gotten even more, but didnt want to seem greedy! LOL it is amazing what nice older folks will share if you ask nicely! now i have to figure out where to plant them. always seems to be the way, isnt it? i wish i planned things better!

Score! Newly Acquired Heirloom Bulbs!!!
Congratulations!! I would definitely say you scored!!
thank you! i cant wait to see them bloom. got all of them planted today. i have read that the authentic byzantine glads are harder to come by and are expensive to purchase. felt very lucky to have been given so many. was tempted to trade some on this forum, but decided i couldnt part with them! i am sure they are the genuine byzantine since they came from a very old house that has had them forever. they seem to really reproduce well. i love that magenta color.

I love the byzantine and yes it seems to be hard to come by.
i was shocked at the price that Old House Gardens was asking per bulb! of course, besides this one neighbor that has tons of them, i dont even see them blooming much around here and there are lots of old homesteads. i guess they are just not grown on a large commercial scale so the price is high.

That's very exciting! Congratulations. My grandmother used to have Byzantine glads. Fortunately my Mom dug some up and shared a few with me. At least one of the ones at my Mom's blooms white. Her others are all magenta, as are mine.

Ooh! You totally scored. I paid a bazillion dollars for some Butter and Eggs two years ago. They didn't show their heads last year--not sure why--but are up and ready to bloom this year. Just a few more days and I finally get to see what they look like....I
I remember by Grandmother in Beaumont had some glads, I think, but I was living in a different part of the country when she passed, so never got any. My granny from East Texas lived in Dallas in her later years and had glorius iris and "thrift". I so regret never getting any, but, again, I was far away so never did. I drive by her house now when in the area and ponder trying to take some, but too chicken.......
Congratulations on your acquisition, aggie!!!! I know OHG gets many of its bulbs from Texas growers. In driving around the neighborhood I have seen lots of people with interesting plants, lots of narcissi, in this area with old houses and farms. It is great that you've been able to hook up with some generous people.
thank you guys! its nice to know that i am not the only one that kinda scopes out other folks plants. lol my kids think i am crazy because i will actually stop and ask for some, on occassion. i have recently started to appreciate the older, tried and true heirloom bulbs that come back every year. am sooooo tired to replanting a ton on annuals every spring.

Way to go!
Yotedog, next time you drive past your granny's house, stop and ring that doorbell... I think the odds are in your favor that somebody would share a few "starts" with you, and you've nothing to lose by asking!
