I just started work at a wholesale nursery, where the boss is an avid Bromel collector! So I took some happy snaps of the front gardens that have a small part of his collection.

Actually, I managed to crop the photos quite well, so you can't see too many of the weeds anyway.
I would love to know the name of this if anyone knows. I can ask the boss, but while I'm here......

I believe thats a Vriesea heiroglyphica in the middle and I think, a Quesnelia to the left?

This is a large, possibly, Neoregelia? Nice gardens eh? I'll try to take some more pics tomorrow if it's fine, as he has an Aechmea orlandiana 'Ensign' which I did get a pic, but it was blurry.
Nice! How fun it must be to work there. Your mystery plant looks like Aechmea "Blue Tango". I have Aechmea "Del Mar" which is a cultivar of "Blue Tango".

Thanks for that Mel! I was wondering what it was. I might have to try and get a piece, when i know the boss a bit better. These are part of his private collection and not for sale. He's been collecting for at least 40 years. I don't know where he keeps them, but he is building a new shade house at the nursery to bring them all into, so I'll be taking photos when that happens! I did take some more today, but my camera is in the car, and I'm on my way outside, so I'll put them on later.

Hey Melanie, you are absolutely correct! Funny, cause I have recently purchased a portea petropolitana, but not seen the flower yet. Mine is the cultivar "Extensa" so I'm not sure if the flower will be exactly the same. I'm going to google it right now!
The USF gardens have a bunch of those portea and I bought two from their plant shop last year. One of them bloomed and I'm hoping they both do this year. It's amazing how big they'll get - not just the plant but the bloom as well.
I googled Portea and looked at the FBS site. There aren't many in that genus! All have similar flowers and 'Extensa' looks the same as the one i took the picture of. It was leaning out of the plant and so I noticed the bloom and not the body! By the way, I asked the boss if the blue one was 'Blue Tango' and he shook his head and said it did not ring any bells! I don't think he can recall its name either! Unless it goes by a different name here, but that hasn't been the case with any others.
