Does anyone know of a place I could pick up few straw bales to mulch my vegetable garden with this year?
Last year, I looked everywhere for some, but simply could not find a source in the general area.
Thanks,
Suze
Looking for straw bale source in the Austin/Bastrop area
Wheat is not grown in this area, Suze. You may have to look for some in north Texas. I do know that last year's wheat crop didn't do very well plus many farmers are turning wheat fields into corn fields because of the demand for biofuel so straw may be in short supply.
I found a link to pine straw, but it is in Nacogdoches.

If pine straw would work for you, you might check with local garden centers. I have heard others say they have found it there. I have never found straw commonly in the south and use pine straw here too.
I haven't seen pine straw either, but then I've only looked in Bastrop and La Grange. I would have thought that at least one entrepreneur living in the Lost Pines area would have though of gathering the bounty and making it available. If it were closer, I'd consider driving up to Nacogdoches, but 203 miles is a little far.
Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I might need to make a road trip to the Metroplex or North Houston to pick some up. Sounds kind of extreme, but I really like to mulch, and I have 20 raised beds and loads of containers to do. Sigh...
When I lived in Fort Worth, it was available at Marshall Grain all the time. A friend in Houston has no problem finding it there, but I forget the name of the garden center where he gets his.
I would also be willing to consider pine straw if someone knows of a source maybe a little closer than Nacogdoches. :o)
I may make some phone calls tomorrow and see what I can find out. If anyone else has ideas, please post your thoughts to this thread.
Thanks,
Suze
You can find straw bales at several locations in Hempstead, Waller, Prairie View, Navasota, Brenham if that helps. Its all over the place north and west of me.
Finding it without weed seeds--now that's the problem.
