A surprise seedling bloom

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is one of my '07 seedlings I found today blooming in the potting shed. There are signs it may develop more orange once it is outside this spring as the shed never gets above 62 degrees. It's a nice feeling to have a blooming brug. when the ground outside is covered with snow and ice. Any bloom at all is worthy. :)

I just had to make myself a glass of fresh orange juice with the juice blender, when I saw your photo. It is great, how the colors are distributed. Wel, you might be right that the flower will color up much more. As it is not it makes me think of an orange smoothie on the top of vanilla ice.

How Yummy looking! Actually, I think it would be quite nice to have a cream color with an orange rim! Very unique! (although I can see the color traveling up the corolla nicely, so that probably won't happen)
My kids would say.."That's Hot" LOL
I can almost smell it now.... ummmmmm!

Yes edible springs to mind ...how exciting! Mango Smoothie mmm!
chrissy

I can picture that LOL How about the perfume? ... give me ... Citrus!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely lovely!

How fun that is, the edges look like they have been dipped in orange tang. Very pretty and when the snow is still with us, nice.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

A very nice looking bloom, can't wait to see more photos! And in our zone no less, congrats!!

Many thanks everyone. So glad you're enjoying this bloom. I just had Steve check for fragrance, and he said it is citrus with a hint of lavendar. I've got a head cold at the moment and cannot smell anything. The cross is Creamsickle X Mountain Magic.

Tussee

edited to add a note from Steve. He said this brug. first bloomed white last fall in the shed. Now that is interesting.

MMMM wish I could smell it!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That's wild that Creamsickle x MM are making such a beautiful orange color for you! I hope to see more MM crosses since it's such a good bloomer!

I have a single white that tried soooo hard to turn orange.. I think it's toast, but I hope not.. it had a beautiful shape. So there is hope! Thank you!

Have you got a pic. of the same bloom today please?

That's a very lovely bloom. I LOVE the orange outlining.

Any more pics?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Lily_love, I checked the bloom today and it is the same, no changes. I was pleased to see it hanging in there and also saw another small bloom developing. Last year I lost a few brugs. in my shed so I added overhead lighting. Only this one is blooming but the others all look good with a few leaves at the top.

Mike, is that a seedling of yours? Very pretty.

Thanks TSMS, it looks very much like 'Super Nova' only SN doesn't have that attractive orange margin. I'd pay good price for your seedling over SN anyday. Thanks for sharing the info.

Mike your Xena is lovely. I bought some seeds from ebay labelled "Xena". I know it's a cross, but don't know what it's crossed with. I hope mine looks like yours. Mine is close to 5 feet tall and tiny budletts have formed. I hope they don't fall off.

TusseeM, That is one beautiful flower, for sure, but it's extraordinatry that it's blooming out in a shed in Indianapolis! Congratulations!

I beg you Tussee, what is your secret? What zone are you in? Did you not get freezing temps this winter? how did this girl keep from freezing? please share. i am a newbie and i thought in a similar zone..NO????

Hi jazzy. I'm in zone 5b as with you so this plant was brought inside my shed last fall for the winter. The shed has heat and overhead lights so the majority of plants in there are in a semi-dormant state, and I withhold water to keep them this way. This plant benefits from a southern door exposure, which is why it is blooming and the others are not. This is my second year with brugs, no secrets I can share with you...I just bump along in the dark hoping for any success that cares to come my way. Good luck to you with your new brugs.

OH.....HEATED SHED!!!! I got it. One thing i don't have!

Ah, "shed", is that Tusseemussee's term for her wonderful 2 carriage detached garage? It has full size carriage doors (garage size) on each end (North and South) and a full wonderful countertop and kitchen cabinets along one wall, complete with a kitchen sink, microwave and telephone. BUT there is dirt on the countertop, I guess that's what makes it a "shed" instead of a kitchen? LOL!

Tussee-
I think it is just gorgeous, and It would be neat if it stayed just like it was.
There are plenty of orange brugs out there, but none like your picture.
It is so cheery.

Thank you, seedpicker. So far the second bloom on this plant has hung on and may open this week, so it will be interesting to see if it has the same coloring.

You will be putting a few of your brugs on the Dave's Auction block - right?? :)

Hi Mike...I'm with you on the excitement of the impending DG auction becoming a reality. As a seller as well as a buyer on ebay, I'm pleased to think the sellers will now have a site where they can reap full compensation for the time and care that goes into their market ready product. Ebay has become too greedy!

Hello all,

I am by no means an expert, but I have been doing some shopping and Brenda from
seedsprout has one that looks simular to that. She calls it Olympic Flame.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

DeeinFl, it will be interesting to see if the second bloom on this seedling blooms the same. That is, if it ever decides to open! Olympic Flame has a shorter and broader corolla, the tendrils appear longer, and from seed sprout's photos, completely colors up as the flower ages. This seedling's flower did not advance in color, but it may do so once outside. I was pleased to see the bloom hold on for a very long time.

Is everyone thinking SPRING!!!

Tussee
