Afternoon all hope your enjoying thins nice but cool day.

I have a game so to speak to play here ...the following pictures I just took out in my terrace where I am thinking of planting some stuff but want to know if these are keepers or not before I turn it over to plant.
So what better place to ask then right here with my friends and such knowledgeable Texans!!!

Picture #1...there is quite a bit of this one growing in the terrace

1 looks like Carolina Geranium - weed
2 looks it could possibly be Salvia Lyrata
3 looks like Black-eyed susan
4 is a little too fuzzy to tell, but the coloring reminds me of wild dewberry

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

that last one is dewberry--I battle with that one still....
3rd one is some sort of rudbeckia--might have a good variety there, is there a bad rudbeckia?!
I agree with sweezil one the first--its a weed, but easy to deal with compared to #4 which has roots here at my house all the way to China.
=)

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

alrighty then THANKS I thought either #2 or 3 was probably black eyed susan as I knew I had those growing here
so #1 & 4 get rid of the best I can LOL
I'm not just sure yet which but I have poppies, rosemary, mint, Italian Oregano and 2 Dianthus to plant so not sure if I want to take those 2 tiers and make them herbs or flowers and put the herbs someplace else

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I was gone all day and missed out on this one, good job girls.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Well gee Jo is a good thing I didn't' call you in the morning after taking my aspirin like you said to do after my day of diggin bamboo LOL

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Isn't #1 called wine cups?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes Phyllis, I was out digging privet myself, and i guess I need some of my own medicine.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

well Jo take some aspirin but don't call me in the morning I leave here by 6am and I will be sitting at Camp Tyler all day tomorrow with a 1st grade class field trip bored LOL

silver I have no idea I figured all you wise and wonderful people could tell me what I have

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mary Lee, the Winecup plant looks very similar to the wild geranium, but the leaves and the flowers are larger and prettier on the Winecup, Callirhoe involucrata
http://www.wildflower.org/gallery/result.php?id_image=21694

and here is the Geranium carolinianum, which is also a native plant.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

You know the leaves of Carolina Geranium do look a whole lot like winecup leaves when I think about it! :) My wine cup leaves are barely popping out of the ground and carolina geranium is all ready mature and spreading, so I am pretty sure that's Carolina Geranium. Plus another difference is that the leaves of winecup are larger.

Mibus, one possible way to confirm about the dewberry, is if it has small prickly thorns on the stems.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok will have to check that out when I get home tomorrow thanks

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, boy. I didn't know about the wild geranium. I thought all those things were wine cups. I used to have wine cups and I just thought they reseeded.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

There is a weed that at first glance, it looks like winecup but it isn't...

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Sweezel, did your wine cup go dormant? Just asking because mine stayed green all year, and I thought they were evergreen.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep, they disappeared some time in the late summer and look like the picture at the bottom, on the right side of this link... http://www.hort.wisc.edu/mastergardener/Features/flowers/callirhoe/callirhoe.htm

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Phyllis, You need to visit Douglas Plant Farm, 650 HWY 175, Frankston, TX
Pretty sure they are close to you. They are the ones that have such beautiful plants that I go to Canton to buy. Canton is closer to me than Frankston but I think it is really close to you. Their plant stock is to die for.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I'll have to do a look at the maps and see just where they are and then check it out LOL...

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

josephine, i know the first plant as a weed but what is it? do you know?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, well, if we're going to show off our WEEDS, I need to get in on it. Anyone know what the real names of these are?

Someone said this one is related to crown vetch. It's a vine that's hard to pull. This year I have it everywhere.

This one looks sort of like some kind of holly. Cutting it down just makes it get fatter and shrub out.

Mamjack the first one is Carolina Gerenium, Geranium carolinianum, a native plant with a very small flower, and it is very vigorous when it gets started.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Patti, the first one is one of the Vetch but there are many so I don't know for sure, but I think it is Purple Vetch, Vicia cracca, it is rampant this year, it is an introduced plant, and this year I am being invaded by it, have spent hours pulling by the roots on my knees on the wildflower slope and I am not even half way done.

The second picture looks like Live Oak seedlings, you have to pull those like the Pecans after a good rain I go out with a pair of plyers and pull like mad, or they will never go away.
Josephine.

yep that's it. i have never seen the flower but it must be flowering since i have an abundance of it every year. is there any benefit to having this plant?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It can be a temporary ground cover since it is an annual, otherwise it is good only if you like it. I usually don't keep it since it takes up the space of other plants that are a lot more showy.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

and just to keep you informed....there are 5-6 goat's rue babies. i'm bringing them in tonight. i thought i had lost them the last freeze/rain we had. when i got up they had a literal sheet of ice on top of the plants which were surrounded with water beneath the ice. i broke the ice up and when the sun came out they continued to stay green. that's all i'll say as i don't want to jinx them. lol.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

This is growing in my pasture. Any idea what it could be?

Mibus, if you have room for the dewberry, it sure makes a great cobbler. I protect mine from the bush-hog as I prefer the taste of dewberry over blackberry. Of course it would take several bushes to produce enough berries, so you need a bit of space. It would need to be somewhere that you don't have to pass often as it is very thorny.

They produce their berries in late May ahead of the blackberries.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

it's hard to tell from that photo but is that that little blue aster plant? if it seeds out it is awful to get rid of.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok so now I also know what the other one I was going to ask about is as I have it all over by the sage..it is the vetch and I need to start puling it out ...ahhhh such fun but it will wait til the weekend since it is already chilly and a lil bit of rain has come through already

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mamajack, I am so excited about the Goat's Rue, I hope it makes it, it sure is a hard one to get started. You are a sweetheart to share some with me.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlene, it is hard to tell what your plant is, but it looks like some kind of shrub that has been chewed down many times and formed a very stocky root.
You might want to let it grow some and see what it does.
Josephine.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Josephine!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

but if it turns up with little blue aster-like flowers get rid of it quick. lol.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Jo, it isn't a shrub at least I don't think so. It is sprawled, laying flat under the growing hay in the pasture. If it were a shrub, I would think I would see some that were larger maybe.

It doesn't seem to be a problem, but with such a thick root, it may be stealing nutrients from the soil that could used by the hay.

It is totally flat when you see it. I would have never noticed it if I weren't out looking for wildflowers.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I was supposed to be helping DH round up cows and I of course got sidetracked looking for wildflowers. I just can't help myself LOL. We have more pastures than woods, but the woods call out to me. There are plenty of woods in back of us and that neighbor allows me to explore.

He let me dig some of his mothers old plants from their old homestead.

I have found so many neat things when I just went out exploring. Mostly good things, but a few redbugs sometimes too.

I got two kinds of fern and some lantana, some passion flower incarnata and of course you probably remember my spiderwort aka dayflowers. I can hardly wait until the really colorful things start to bloom this year. Now that I belong to DG, I can actually find out what they all are. I do find some of them in books sometimes.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well whatever it is let it grow and watch what it does, it will be interesting to find out, it could very well be the little aster that Mamajack is talking about.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I love to go exploring too, so many lovely things out there, it is a lot of fun!!
