My bulbs, tulips, hyacinth and allium are all coming up. I have new growth on my garden phlox, bee balm, my lobelia has new growth, so do my mums and my hydrangeas are going like crazy. I know it seems a little early, but since mother nature seems to think it's warm and springlike, is it ok to start planting seeds and other plants. From what I can tell from weather sites we are not in for anymore freezing nights. What's the vote, plant now or wait. I don't wait very well however.
Thanks
Vicki
2nd year gardener, I cant wait, can we start now?
Sowing seeds undercover by all means, do now. Half hardy seeds - its a little early for direct outdoors. HA no problem, but should go in a well weeded, already mulched area (mulching over the seeds may cause them to not germinate). Soil temperatures are still a tad cold for anything to really get going - but anything in pots or bareroot can and should (respectively) get planted now. Its a great time for moving plants around - if you have some that are in the wrong place, dig them out and replant in another location.
Having said all of that, I work on the advice that Christopher Lloyd gave: the best time to do something is when you are thinking about it. Enjoy vicki, it sounds like it would be almost impossible to rein in your enthusiasm.
I'm with Laurie on that. The only thing to remember is we have gotten some cold snaps in March, If you put out anything tender have some black garbage bags handy in case you have to cover them.
Enjoy
I'm moving my arbor day trees outside, with the knowledge that I'll have to watch the nighttime temperatures and protect them. But since the weather has been so warm, it's a good opportunity to get them used to outdoors and get them off my counters.
I have winter-sown seedlings coming up every day. IMHO, you're okay to start planting things in March, with the knowledge that you have to be on the alert for any nighttime freezes that Mother Nature may see fit to throw our way.
