not-so-hot kitty

Tucson, AZ

kitty's plumeria does not like the cold! i think it was november of last year that i discovered this. i immediately brought her in the house and placed her on the heat mat. up until last week she had been on the heat mat 24/7 next to a north facing window. she looks bad on the outside. however, i had a feeling that everything was fine. that was confirmed today when i cut 50" of branches to send to luc for grafting. sap flowed readily. my hands are actually sticky right now. yea kitty!

Never have seen damage like that. Good to hear it is still alive.

Any idea what causes that?

hetty - it is just cellular damage from the cold. i am seeing some very minor cases of it on the plumeria that wintered outside under the patio. i guess one would call this dry rot if a name has to be put to it. in this case it's just dessication of the green bark that stops at the wood.

Yes, I have some of that too; fortunately just one or two branches on a larger tree...

and they do okay in the spring, right?

Spring has just arrived.... wait and see.

Dete, I don't have damage like that. Glad she will be okay. I just cut off some more limbs with the slits, but there was a lot of sap flow too so I think the bases will be all right. It looks like there are no more plumies with slits so that is good.

glad to hear that clare! how is your kitty doing?

Dete, Dewaine just posted some pics that look like mine. Here is what I cut off today. Dewaine has the same thing. It must be cold damage.

Buddy is doing great. Thanks for asking:-)

This is the damage that I found earlier. Dewaine has one that looks exactly the same.

Dete, it just occurred to me where I've seen damage like that. You don't supposed Kitty got nibbled on by snails, do you?

Tucson, AZ

hi clare,

yikes! that damage went deep.

no snails. dewaine asked me that earlier. no insect damage.

glad to hear that buddy is doing well. now how is your kitty plumeria doing? LOL

Ouch, how many of your plants look like that clare?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Dete. Buddy is my kitty:-) I have no Kitty plumeria:-( I never got one. Oh, okay. I thought maybe it was slug or snail damage. They do like to nibble on plumerias sometimes. Yeah, that damage is deep, but the rest of the plumie looks good. There was a lot of sap bleeding when I cut.

Davie, I only have a few that look like this. I thought maybe it was residual Roundup damage now that the plumerias are coming out of dormancy, but I think it could just be cold damage, especially after seeing that Dewaine has it too.
