chicken flooring

Adairsville, GA

putting up a new building with wood floor. was wondering if the long sheets of linoleum turned bottoms up would be o.k. for the chickens. i have to have a slighty rough surface due to two disabled ducks that are with my chickens. any thoughts? i should say that because of the ducks problems they are VERY messy with water and ended up rotting the wood floor in their old building. thanks for hints or tips.

Hi, Peeps, I don't know about using wood flooring. I put cement down for mine. It won't rot and varmints can't tunnel in from underneath. I would think after a while even with the linoleum, a wood floor would eventually rot if there is a problem with excess water. But it might work.

the building came with a wood floor. its prebuilt and delivered in one piece.

I wonder if you could use a sealer like the ones they use for truck beds. You could maybe use something like that and then put the linoleum down on top of it. Or, DH made a suggestion of using cement on top of the wood to keep out the water.

I have the answer!!! Go to the lumberyard and purchase a roll of "GRACE ICE AND WATER SHIELD", it is a self-adhesive rubberized product that is made for sticking to roof boards or roof sheathing to prevent water and ice from "backing up" and leaking into your house. It costs (maineiac: chokes) about $90 for a 3' X 75' roll, but is worth it's weight in gold. I have also used it to patch a rusty fender an an old pickup truck (I might be a redneck), repair a camper roof, line the inside of a styrofoam incubator to bacteria-proof it, restrain hostages in my basement...You get the picture. It is as essential to me as a roll of duct tape. Just leave enough, maybe 3" on either end of your pieces you cut, to stick up the walls, which seals all the cracks where moisture can penetrate to rot. I believe the rubbery surface may work for poultry, as it is soft, not slippery, but you could put your linoleum over it if needed.

Thank you, Maineiac, for the name of a "cure-all" that I wish I had had when I needed it. (We had a problem with our fiberglass panel porch roof this winter.) Just told DH about it. Think I am going to get a roll.

I have a great chicken building but my ducks don't have any interest in going inside. They stay outside all night long. In the coldest winter nights I see them in the water trough taking a "hot tub bath". They get 55f degree water when its 5f below zero or colder. I am envious because we don't even have a hot tub for the family.

yes ur idea would work. i use osb for mine. that rubber drawer liner would work too stapled to the floor also. i used to use it in my brooders. another thing might work is paint that has play sand in it and paint the floor with it.
hope this helps,
silkie
