New begonia- palm leaf begonia

Snohomish, WA

Has anyone ever grown one? Just got a starter plant at The NW Garden Show, and want to do it justice. Tag says it'll get 6-8' tall? It might have to go outside if it does. I am zone 8a. Any info would help. Thanks!

This is Luxurians. I have bought two and killed both of them. From what I can tell it likes temperatures on the cooler side. I live in Dallas Texas in the same zone as you and when it gets hot here in Texas it just swrivles up and dies. Do you have a temperature controlled greenhouse where it can be kept cooler during the summer? I talked to the grower at the greenhouse where I bought it and he said it would have to be a pretty established plant to make it in our heat in the summer. Other than that he recommeded a cool greenhouse.

No green house, but I do have a nice cool basement if it starts to frizzle on me. I think your summer temps are a bit higher than mine. I was stationed in Ft. Sill OK and I remember the weather there! Been to Dallas many a time, and I am going to Houston this spring. Want to check out the nurseries and visit family.
What other begonias do you have? Ever propagate a cane from cuttings? I have an Angel wing that is getting out of hand that I put on anouther thread seeking advice. Would appreciate any advice! Thanks! Gordon

I have about 45 different begonias. I have often propogated canes by cuttings in water. I have even had success by placing cuttings in a mix of vermiculite/pearlite. If you are in Washington State you should have no problems with heat. Ha. Ha. For some reason I thought you were in the South. Good luck.

B. Luxurians does great where I am and is outside all year long. It is cool here. It stays on my porch with a bit of plant overhang for protection. It even tolerates light frost.

Really, Kell? Because out on the backporch was where I have invisioned a group of potted begonias grow. I have been trying to stay on the one of everything matra. But begonias are so cool! Whats your fave?

Anyone that does not look half dead. LOL

I go for the hairy, curly, patterned rhizomatous ones the most. But any that are grown well, I want.

Give me give me give me.

I am hot for this one this week because it grew big outside with no protection all winter and does not look pathetic like a lot of mine do after a wet winter. It has a bit of everyting fun.

Cool! What a sweet beg! I really like the canes, but my rex is doing pretty well. I am currently dismantling my AW beg. Almost 3 ft tall, so lots of cuttings.

I am down to my last leaf on my Escargot. I have had it for 3 years. It has almost died a couple of times. I can only water it once a month at most. I did it twice this month and it is on its death bed.

Kristi (datdog) had one growing in her yard a few years ago that made nuts with desire. It loves heat/humidity I take it. Not cold and wet like here.

Yours looks so happy also. Escargot hates me so much.

Here is Kristi's Escargot. Amazing. Her picture too.

It has stayed inside this winter and about doubled inside. Bloomed all Dec. I am going to be doing some cuttings, some of the leaves are sticking out there aways, want some?
