When is it OK to use rainwater?

I'd like to set up a rain barrel or two to collect rainwater off my roof to water my plants. I have asphalt shingles. Is it OK to use the rainwater that runs off my roof to water my veggies, or should I just use it on my nonedibles?

Yes, it should be good to use. Probably fewer contaminants than the runoff into lake water from imprevious cover such as roadways.
