Pruning, pinching and/or Y-ing??

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Can someone direct the to the threads that discuss pruning etc. My sanguinea is looking a little silly with one big leafy stalk. I’m wondering if I should chop the top off… or remove the leaves from the bottom of the stalk... or just leave it alone?

well, no one ever said for sure what to do:) I got frustrated with mine, it wasn't 'Y'ing, so I chopped it's head off. It put out 3 nicely spaced limbs that are fixing to bloom. I didn't do anything to the others, and they 'Y'ed by themselves one at about 3', one at 4'. They are fixing to bloom too. I read on one site that they do it at different heights, depending on the type. I did start taking the leaves off the bottom to make it look like a tree, but I don't think that has anything to do with when it 'Y's.

just when i got frustrated with the straight stem, i noticed a tiny little y starting on the candida double white. its been in bloom now for about 2 weeks.
id say just leave it alone and when its ready it will do its thing.

it's my understanding if you want a tree and the taller it gets with out branching the better the umbrella will look but the down side is it doesn't bloom until it does branch

Did I read in one of the posts earlier, that the plant has to have a "y" thing going before it will bloom? I pooh poohed it at the time (as thought I know anything about brugmansias....) but now, I saw that one of mine has a y thing going, and coincidentally that is the only one with buds on it.....
so, are they suppose to have a y before they bloom? or not?

from everything I can find, yes. Of course, I helped one of mine get a Y :) I'm just so impatient!!! LOL

poppy, i kept thinking about this, and if you want it to branch, pinch it!!! you will probably stimulate growth which may help it grow and bloom faster, you certainly won't kill it, and it probably won't bloom for a while anyway in your zone and being seen grown. tiG, i have been told by someone they don't all Y first, can't remember what kind it was he said that didn't...
i have pinched some, but didn't keep records....

of if it is that tall, cut the top off and try to root it.

So is this Y thing just the plant branching out? I have two sanguineas I started from seed. One of them has branched but it's towards the base of the plant. The other is just one tall stalk. Maybe I should pinch the tall one? Should I leave the lower branches on the other one?

i think i would pinch before it gets any taller. for the one branched already, the more stems, more places for blooms.
