advice on black gumbo soil

I just purchased a property ouside of Houston and I've been told the soil is black gumbo. Is this a good soil for plants and trees? If not how do I ammend it?

The first two sites tell how to amend the soil. The last one has lists of plants that will thrive in gumbo soils.
