Tiny egg!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Since we had so much fun a few months ago posting huge monster eggs, I thought I'd share my smallest yet! I laughed really hard when hubby brought this one in. I expected it to not have a yolk but it did!

I usually joke about how bad I feel when they lay the huge eggs but I'm wondering if the hen even noticed this one "fell out". LOL

An old farmer told me that eggs that small are from a young hen and its her first egg. Have you ever heard that? and do you have a young hen that has not layed yet?

Hello Geo!

I can't say for certain but I doubt it was anyone's first egg. All of my birds are exactly the same age and moving up on one year old. I do know my blue eggs stopped coming when it turned really cold.

We used to get them, called them "hiccups". I still have two shells that I blew the contents out of. Was planning on making an easter egg tree with them as mine are araucana eggs. But, we culled our araucana last fall, so have no more green/blue eggs. So if we get any brown hiccups, I will add them to my supply.

Hi, Geo, noticed what you posted. Mine were not pullet eggs either. They would lay them a few times a year. I never did find out which hen laid them as we had more than one Araucana. We would get a brown one every once in a while too. So, they can be laid throughout the hens life and not just when they start.

I have also found out that your double and triple yolk ones are generally laid by pullets who's systems have not regulated yet. The other hens we had did that but the Australorps didn't lay small or super big ones. Just nice sized eggs.

We've had a small egg like that before. I don't think it had a yolk though.

I read somewhere that small eggs like that are called "wind eggs". I don't know why. Maybe more are laid when the wind blows?

I have 3 RIR's they have been laying one big egg each, every day for three or four months now. Today I just got my first tiny egg. Like, quail size! And we did have a large wind storm last night. I was just looking to find out if anyone else knew anything about this. So maybe there is something to it.
