Living Wreath

Medina, OH

Has anyone attempted to make a living wreath with small leaved hoyas? Am considering using curtisii and serpens. Any other ideas?

Wow! What a great wreath that would be! I can just picture it in my mind all in bloom at once!

Here is a picture of one I saw in Philippines this trip - made from D. ruscifolia...

Oh, that is really pretty! Love the heart shape too ... hadn't even thought of that, I was just thinking of how nice a regular old round wreath would look with Hoya's. Is D. ruscifolia a Dischidia?

Yes...called Million Hearts or something, I think. The leaves are heart shaped too!

Thank you all for your input. Maybe I'll just table the idea for a while... Susan

Skeeler, if you have any small leaf hoyas I hope you will attempt this project and post a photo here! I bet it would be beautiful. And, I would love to hear step by step directions of what you use for the wreath and which plants you decide to use! I was wondering if one could buy a wire wreath form and stuff it somehow with the Long Fiber Spaghnum Moss and twine the hoya vines around? Or I wonder if you could just twine vines around one of the grape vine wreaths? I know Spaghnum can dry out quickly ... guess either way you would have to keep an eye on it and water regularly. I doubt I could keep something like that alive, I tend to let things get too dry as it is. But, it sure would be a great looking wreath!

Hi Plantlady-Thanks for the encouragement! My initial information on living wreaths suggested using succlulents. The photos were amazing. I have a good supply of curtisii and serpens and thought I could work with them. The living wreath form I was thinking of
using is 16". Are we allowed to post websites? I'll be happy to fill you in if it is allowed. In the meantime, won't you please send
some warm sunshine to snowed in Ohio? Thanks in advance. Susan

Susan, Yes, definitely post the link to the website. It is allowed, we do it on all the forums.

Sending Sunshine up your way!

We had a cold front come through and had a low of 35 degrees here last night! Our high today is only in the 50's but it is Sunny!

Plantlady-Google Kinsmangarden.com. They have living wreath forms and lots of other goodies. Sunshine has arrived, but where is the warmth? Susan

I've seen step-by-step instructions on how to make a wreath with succulents. I would think it would be the same with hoyas.

Good luck and have fun!

that living wreath i posted a photo of .... the base structure was made out of Tree Fern sections wired together...but then the Philippines are humid and hot. I would think that you could use those forms made out of willow (?) they sell at the crafts shops....or wire *even better...and then cover it and stuff the corners with long fiber spagnum moss and use the same techniques for mounting cuttings that are used when mounting dischidias on tree fern. A couple of issues ago in STEMMA Antone Jones wrote EXACTLY how to do it.
