Please advise on these Passi seeds

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I put several Giant Passion flower NOID seeds in OJ last night to soak overnight and tonight I rinsed them and this is what I found. Are these germinated seeds or what? I have a few pictures so please bear with me.

#s 1 & 6 are the same seed. The other 2 kinds I soaked don't look like this. Please help.

Peggy, did you say you soaked in orange juice? That is an interesting way to soak seeds. :o)

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I read about it on this forum, the acid in the OJ helps to break down the hard seed shell to help germination. It's the 1st time I have done it. We'll see what happens.

I will be anxious to see what it does, and would like to know if it works with other 'tough' seeds as well! :o)

morning princess tammy.:o)
i soak my hard seeds in peroxide, and some actually gerimate in the bowl. it work good if you don't back over them in the driveway

Hey Kathy, don't feel bad. DH ran over the trash can the other day and last Saturday he set the ash bucket in the drive and I didn't know that he set it behind my truck. When I left for church on Sunday am I heard something and remembered he said he sat the ash bucket there. I'm glad the hot coals had gone out overnight. I told him he should not have sat it behind my truck in the 1st place. It was pretty smooshed but he was able to get it in some semblence of a ash bucket again with a hammer.

HA HA HA At least hubby did it and not you, Peggy! :o)

moral of the story: running over seeds can get expensive:o)

may princess tammy never kick her own butt

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Nope, but I sure wanted to kick DH.

You're right Kathy. LOL Running over plants is VERY expensive at your house.

Your seeds have not germinated. The gooey stuff is the arils surrounding the seeds-the edible part for edible species. I usually remove it as it could possibly inhibit germination, but then again it may not. I soak seeds for three days in water, then put them in plastic bag with some moist potting soil and place in a warm location (heating mats work really well). I inspect them daily. After a few days to possibly weeks, you will see the root starting to peek out of germinated seeds. As soon as I find one that has germinated, I plant it in a small pot about 0.25-0.5 inches deep.

Were the seeds just not cleaned well before they were given to me? They looked pretty clean. I usually peel off the dried "skin" if it is attached when I receive the seeds. I started 3 different kinds the other day and these are the only ones that did this.

Last fall I started several kinds of seeds, 6-8 seeds of each kind and I wound up with one Giant Passiflora, 2 Incarnata, and 0 Lady Margaret. This sounds like it is a pretty normal germination rate. I couldn't figure out why my germination rate was so bad, maybe it wasn't me after all.

Thanks for the comment on my pictures.

In all honesty, the pics I saw looked like they still had the pulp sticking to them even though they had been rinsed. It just didn't look like germination to me. Someone else brought up the subject of soaking in OJ, well, I do that with my own seeds. I'm not the best at germinating seed but I also don't use bottom heat and still have some decent sucess so I would have to say that the OJ could possibly help and certaintly couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the comment. Now I have a better idea of how well to clean them.

You are most welcome, Peggy! Hope you had a wonderful day!!!

I have one Lady Margaret that germinated so far. I hope a couple more germinate also.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I now have 3 Lady Margaret that have germinated and one of the "Giant Passionflower" that germinated.

I usually soak passi seeds in warm milk (lactic acid). Its worked fine for me before. The seeds don't look like they've germinated yet. I would go ahead and plant them in potting soil, keep'm warm, and see what happens. You have to be patient with passi seeds :)

Good luck and keep the pics coming!

The giant passiflora is the one with the fuzzy stuff on it. I was glad to see it germinated though.
