Pets in Mourning

I realize that this is a question with no practical answer. Still, I'm interested in hearing how people have coped.

One pet dies at the hospital/is put under. The friend is still around and struggling to grasp the situation. This is so hard to watch that it's worse than the loss of the first pet in some cases. No answers, I guess, but any thoughts?
