New from Nor Cal.

Hi everyone!
I am new here, and new to gardening. Or at least new to gardening in th ground and not in pots! I recently remarried and moved from apartment 'patio' living to a house with a 'junk yard' backyard. After looking out my window for and entire year at junk and dirt.... I am fed up and doing something about it!
My plan is to completely landscape my yard by winter, and I REALLY have my work cut out for me ! :)

I have spent this last winter planning and reading and searching the internet. I think I have everything planned, now its the fun part of cleaning up the yard and fulfilling the plan!

My first grandbaby was born just before christmas, and I'd like my yard to be toddler friendly by the time he's walking. I'm keeping a blog on DG with pictures, just to keep myself motivated and see how far I've come.

Right now, I am searching for seeds- does anyone know of a good site to buy seeds at? I dont want common everyday flowers, I want to find unusual, rare type flower.... so If anyone knows of a good site to buy seeds at, I would really appreciate the help.

It is also really nice to log on here (yes until way past midnight!) and read about all the ideas and creativity that people are implementing in their gardens... :) You have all been really friendly and I appreciate it (so does my local nursery, as I am no longer calling them every day with my mundane questions! LOL).

Anyhow, I just found this thread tonight and thought I would introduce myself. Feel free to check out my garden blog and give me encouragement along the way ;) I will definitely need it! LOL

Welcome, Annmarie! Wish I could help you out with where to get the seeds, but I am a newbie myself. But I still wanted to come in and welcome you to DG! :o)

Welcome to DG Annmarie! Sounds like you have a wonderful plan and I hope it all comes to life for you.
I buy a lot of seeds from www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com they have a great selection and my germination rate has been very good.

I wish you the best of luck with your garden! Remember, soil is #1 priority to "fix" first..

Thanks, I actually found Dianes heirloom seed link here on DG, just ordered $50 worth of seeds! YIKES! LOL, soil is going to be all new, we decided to create raised beds over the top of the clay. In a few weeks, I'll get to start sowing seeds! ;)

Welcome to DG from just down the street. Thompson & Morgan has a wide selection http://www.tmseeds.com/ and don't miss a trip to http://anniesannuals.com/ to get some nice unusual plants that have already been started. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/813614/ is an example of one I got several years ago and just now coming to bloom.
Don't rule out bulbs http://www.thebulbman.com/ has a wonderful selection of S African bulbs, many of which do well here. You're welcome to come visit my jungle any time, I may even have divisions of things you might like.

Wow George! Thanks for all the links! I atually have bought many of Annies Annuals at Regans. I LOVE them! Just bought a milkweed seedling last week. I want to try starting my own seeds, so I can save on money. I have a HUGE yard full of dirt, dirt and more weeds and dirt right now. :)

I will definitely save the links that you provided so I can order bulbs (they are out of stock right now).

Are you going to the San Fran garden show?

I'm still undecided... traffic there is horrendous!

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Unfortunately my work (tax preparer) precludes taking off enough time to see this show. I will probably just get to see it vicariously through Henry's Garden http://www.kron.com/Global/category.asp?C=19473&nav=menu130_7_7 Check out http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/813662/ for some others that will be going. Maybe you can get a carpool set up
The BulbMan moved a couple of years ago and the rodents at his new digs ate a bunch of his stock, so he has been slowly replenishing. One of my favorites http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/97471/ is in bloom now.

Thanks! I'll go check them out now!
