help with azalea replanting

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

Someone planted an azalea on a steep slope at church. They planted it on a mound! It is in full sun. I do most of the work in the flower beds at church and think I should move it. Any suggestions, please. I have azaleas but mine are under trees on a gentle slope and they do great. Thanks

Hi Smokey!
The azalea could be moved if it isn't too big. Azalea roots can be extensive. I'd do it before it gets too warm as well. Heat is hard on the plant, also hard on you! I have my azaleas under tree cover as well. Good luck.

That azalea is doomed unless you move it, Smokey. Or get out and water it twice a day during the sunmmer months. Most varieties of azaleas are understory shrubs, and do best in bright shade. Some varieties can survive the rigors of full sun, but most are happier with some shade. I'd move it if I were you. The damage to the roots has already been done with the 1st transplanting---I don't think moving it again can hurt it much more, since I think it would have struggled shooting new roots planted in full sun on a steep slope. But do it now, before it breaks dormancy! Give the poor thing a fighting chance!
