I hadn't seen this plant before and it's not listed in the DG plant files. I saw it at Walmart this morning and wondered if it's actually something that would do well here or if the Walmart buyers just stuck it in there for suckers.
I'm interested because it's supposed to be a good draw for hummers.
Weigelia, ie Cardinal Shrub in TX?
I got one from WalMart Last year and it's tripled in size and it bloomed last year. But toward the end of summer, it started looking scorched. I think it would do well in a place where it's protected from direct midday to afternoon sun in the summer. Mine is only protected from afternoon sun. It's dormant right now, I can't wait to see what it does this year. I'll let you know.

here's the plant files. also, i talked with a company rep last year from proven winners about the purple leafed varieties....they said they would prob. be green in texas in the heat.
I bought two very late this past fall, too late to plant. So they overwintered in the greenhouse. I'll find out this summer how they handle the heat. I've read that in areas with hot summers, they will need some shade. I'm assuming it needs some afternoon shade here.
Thanks for the link, mamajack, and thanks for all the comments, everyone! I guess when I did the search for it in plantfiles, I put Weigela as the common name rather than the genus, and I seemed to have misspelled it too (no wonder I didn't find it) but so did Walmart because I wrote it exactly as it was on the package, lol.
Bronc, your comment is very encouraging! I think I will get one. Also, the comments from you and bettydee definitely change my ideas of where to put it. I may actually do it in a large-ish pot until I figure out where it wants to be because my first thought was a spot I have where it would probably have been in too much sun.
Dear PK,
Notice that weigela likes acidic soil which may be a problem in Georgetown.
peeper, sometimes it's easier to google a plant if you are looking for it in the plant files than it is to actually USE the plant files. lol.
Good thought jabee! Maybe I've ammended my soil enough for it OR maybe it's dead and I just don't know it yet.
Dormant, TJ positive thinking...its not dead, it is dormant.
TJ nick the wood - if green you know it is dormant.. if not wellllllllll maybe it will come back from the roots :-)
Note to self: Mix in lotsa peat with the potting soil. :o)
It's not dead. I was just kiddin'. It's had some bud formation recently.
question..........which of these phrases were used where you came from?
pure t
pure d
speaking of someone being full of pure d (or t) h%$L.
i need an argument settled. lol
It's pure D!!
come on texas. i need to hear from everyone. thanks bronc. that's what i said. but those eastern seaboard southern folk are wanting to argue with me and i gotta put them in their place.
d - it is d for sure
evil laughing here. that's 3 for texas!!!
Where is this debate?
lol. well it's sort of my own creation bronc but it's over on the 4paws calla chat thread in the co-op forum. come on over and stir up a little dissent with me. it'll be fun because we outnumber them 5 : 3 so far.
Mama - you sure do keep things very interesting! Love it!!!
it's what i do best mitch. lol.
i am a "word" person in that i love the origins and nuances esp. southern ones. i have no life so it's easy for me to get wrapped up in why southerners would say this differently depending on which part of the south they live. okla. says D. as does La., ala., miss and texas. i'm on the hunt now for a bona fide floridian...anybody know one? lol and i need to talk to tenn. since it seems that the switch occurs somewhere between the eastern seaboard and ala.
Pure d, no question at all. Gene
looks like everyone that says this uses D except for the carolinas and georgia. it's just pure d strange to me. lol
pure t? pure d? please explain! Does it refer to how the word dormant is pronounced?
I can tell you if you're a pure D Texan, you'll say "pure D".
bettydee, I can't explain. I don't know the origin, I just know we say something is pure d whatever. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the word dormant.
Hey us native Okies say it up there too...
....but what does it mean? I'm a native, but I've never heard it used before!
BETTYDEE....this phrase is used all over the south. and it's used to describe character traits or a condition of life so it's an adjective. also, it usually is used only to describe negative character traits or awful conditions. and if used then it is meant to convey that the negative character trait is to the N'th degree. someone is not just mean....they are pure d mean...thru and thru without one good bone in their body. a pure d nuisance is an extremely annoying individual.
pure d misery is he-double hockey sticks on earth.
i'm not sure if it's some kind of southern slang for the word "pretty" as in purdy and then on to PURE D. or if the word was PURE to start with. the letter d might mean dam# and it might not. all i can say is that most southerners have at least heard it. and for whatever reason the carolinas and georgia say T instead of D. lol.
Thanks for the info, mamajack.
