Seed Pods

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

These three seed pods halfway up the tree. There are two more at the top!!! I will get DH to pick me one to grow out.

H. cv. Black Star is a cross between H. ciliata X H. affinis. i would love to grow one out 9and I will) to see if there are any 'reversions'...unfortunately, the shapes of the two parents are pretty much the same....

That is just so cool! Wow! Look at the size of those pods! Can't wait to see the results once you pick one and get those seeds sprouted! Will the pods on the tree split open, fall to the ground and germinate? Or do birds get them first?

Yes...they are huge. They split open and each seed has a little parachute...so they blow off in the breeze...floating ever so gently....

Ooooh ... wish some could ever so gently float across the sea to Florida. :)

hmmmm .... I wonder if folks will start asking me why I'm watching the westward sky? Is it a Bird, is it a Plane .... no, it's hoya parachute's floating in the wind!

edited to say: That is a cool photo ... they really do look sorta like whispy little parachutes!

Wow..Carol, looks like you got that shot just as the little bugger were taking flight. Good shooting, and good growing.
