Hello Everyone!
I got this plant for a penny :) my ? is how can I get some really big leaves? If I put it in the ground can I dig it up safely? Will it get big in a pot? What should I feed it?The 2 little leaves are about the size of a 50 cent coin.
Is it to small to really do anything this year? That was a lot of questions....lol.The Hilo Beauty is tiny too.
1 cent Borneo Giant
I would suggest growing it out as best you can as they are in the pot. A warm humid area if inside a humidity dome helps similar to a terrarium. Once the plants are right around 8 inches to 1 foot tall you can put them in the ground for summer usually 2 to 3 week or so in May. The soil should be rich and well drained full to part sun. You may lose your indoor leaves and the plant will grow new leaves adapted to the brighter light outdoors.
Thanks Brain, I put a soda bottle over it ....should I put it on my heat mat?
I will give you 2 pennies for it, that's double your money.
LOL if I can get it to grow you can have a baby for free. :*)
I have Borneo Giant seedlings that small, and yes, they can grow quite large from that size in a summer. I hold mine back because if I pushed every little seedling I have, I'd need 10 acres and a BIG nursery budget for all the huge plants I'd end up with!!
I really want it to grow big! LariAnn does it make a bulb?
To state that it makes a "bulb" would show a gift for understatement. Check this link out to see what they do:

Of course, yours won't get quite that large in PA, but it will get bigger than any other Alocasia you can grow there. You will have to either dig it up in the Fall before first frost, or you'll have to build a heated greenhouse around it!
Woo hoo! Yours is Amazing :)..come on Spring I have a spot already planned for Penny. I won't be getting a GH but I got a good shovel LOL. Thanks for the link LariAnn. What a wonderful plant.
