What hatchery is the best to buy from?

Conroe, TX

We are wanting to get some more chicks, mostly bantams. What hatchery is the best to buy from? We have looked at McMurray Hatchery, the Cackle Hatchery and Ideal Poultry. Has anyone ordered from any of these and what was your experience? Are there any others I don't know about? Thanks! :)

I love meyer hatchery! they have great customer service, they are nice and the chicks were healthy, sexed correctly and well packaged. and i got less than 25.

We've just had a thread about this in the last couple of weeks, so if you poke around, I bet you would find it pretty easily and get a lot more opinions.

Thanks! I browse through and look for the postings.

I think you will hear good and bad about all the hatcheries. I think you need to check out all the sites and see who offers the best deal.
I think the weather and the PO has much to do with some complaints....so if someone had losses in the order, it might not be the fault of the hatchery. My favorite of all my birds is the ameraucana bantams. They are so sweets and the roosters are very well mannered too.
I got mine from mypetchicken. com but that is because i wanted/needed small order. I hear mcmurray, ideal, meyers are all good places to order. I have heard if you order from a small order place other than mypetchicken, they put all rooster in for warmth. So if you are ordering less than 25 chicks, ask them about that if you dont want that to happen. Good Luck!!!

Meyers does have a special small order, which they say doesn't include extra roosters, but does include a heating pad and special shipping. They are putting in an at least one extra chick, but they say it is just in case of loss during shipping. I certainly hope it is not a rooster. My order of 6 chicks, I think the minimum order, is due from Meyers Wednesday. I'll let you know how it works.

Exactly! That's what sold me on them. I did exactly that, Catscan, as well as my mother, and both of our bonus chicks were hens. Also, we didn't lose anybody and were really impressed by the care they were packed with. THey were also really nice when I called up frantic when my chicks were late.

Backyard, that is wonderful to hear. My chicks are due tomorrow and I spent the holiday fixing their brooder. Did you use sugar water or anything else to perk them up? This is my first time with mail-order, my other chicks were through the feed store. Nervous! Excited! Nervous!

Thanks for the info :)
I think we may go with Ideal because they are in TX and so are we. The transit time would be shorter for the little ones. My husband doesn't mind if they add roosters for warmth, he says dinner! Of course we have to wait till they grow.
