Sugestions for window box plants for Zone 8b - Full Sun

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Hello Everyone;

I live in Tallahassee, Fl. zone 8b and would like some sugestions for window box plants. I have 9 ceramic rectangle 16 x 9 x 7 inch window boxes hanging off my front porch. My house faces south and is in full sun. I'm looking for something that has color to it and is fairly low maintence.

I am interested in answers. Nearly everywhere on my property is full sun, and I am interested in gardening in containers because every time I try to dig, I am trying to dig into rock. (The gophers seem to dig through it with no trouble.)

But, doesn't the container heat up? what happens to roots when it gets hot?

I grew "Million Bells", Calibrichoa (sp) last year in similar containers. They can handle low maintenance and are great container plants. They cascade beautifully! Also "dragon's Blood Sedum" has a lovely trailing habit and is VERY low maintenance. Let us know what you deciede!

Also, I added the little moisture pellets that hold water (It's late, the name escapes me) to keep from getting too dry. It worked wonderfully.

There's a co-op going on for the Watersorb crystals right now and time to get in an order.

Blue Daze is heatproof as long as you keep it watered. It cascades. Pentas are upright in habit, but the short ones (NOT butterfly) should look fine in a window box. They likewise take blazing Texas sun in containers, so you should have success with them. How about the humble periwinkle?

Duiguid...You're in quite a tough climate. Not tropical and lot's of humidity. JLP suggests Calibrachoa and I just love that plant but I have a real hard time growing it here in Port Charlotte when it starts getting humid. I plant it every year though, thinking it's just me! But If it survives in the humidity in LA...maybe?

Dp mentions Blue Daze - I does well as I have plants that have survived for at least a year. Porter Weed is another one that does well in a humid climate as well as Angelonia. I also find Foxtail ferns love the Humidity. Coleus is also good.

A Big pot of Angelonia...

This is a real old pot...I just keep putting all the left-overs into it, but the blue-daze is really nice.

How about planting some Caladium bulbs? They seem to do well in all types of climate.

jlp222 is "right on" with the two suggested, also, any of the gray plants take full sun nicely, they love it. Right off, I can think of lambs ears, dusty miller and there is a new hybrid of the dusty miller out but can't think of the name of it, most herbs love the full sun but lavender would get too big.

Awww, thanks Bugme : )
