Brug seeds

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I just broke open 3 seed pods from one of my Brugs. I now have a pile of seeds. I have read that the seed germination rate goes down as the seeds age. I have no intention of growing all of these seeds. (Maybe a couple.) Anyone interested in some seeds? I can share 10 seeds per packet to folks who want some.

D-mail me if interested.

The mother Brug was Pink Beauty ( http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53619/ ), the cross was from Pink Ecuador ( http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/3045/ ).

I don't have room for anymore this year, but it sure is pretty.
I have 2 seed pods on my white one, with a yellow center. I don't know it's name. But anyway, do the pods crack open when they are ready? They look like 2 big cigars. lol

All my baby brugs that I won in a contest on here, are all rooted and growing like weeds. : )

My pod was becoming brown and mushy. I thought the pod had rotted, but when I pulled it off the branch, it cracked open and there were all these seeds! So I pulled the other 2 pods off, too. More seeds! The seeds look ripe and literally fell from the pod onto the table.

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks, I'll check mine tomorrow and see if I think they are ready.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Look at the pod where it is attached to the branch. If it looks like it is drying up, then it may be ready or very close to ripe.

Ok, that's a good idea. : )

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

woo hoo Becky!!!!!. Looks like you did a great job raising those babies. Told you it was easy :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Donna - Since it came from good stock, I can truly thank YOU!!! :-) Ecuador Pink is getting ready to bloom again. I transplanted it into a bigger pot and it is out in my front garden bed by the front door. It seems to like it there. :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Donna - All the cuttings you sent me in November that I had rooted successfully died except 2. Miss Emily McKenzie and Day Dreams are doing well. Not sure what happened to the others, but they were tip cuttings. (Probably gardener error.) The 2 survivors were branch cuttings. And of course I still have Whiskers, Pink Beauty, and Ecuador Pink. Out of these 5, which one is the smallest when fully grown? I am thinking of adding one to my front garden bed, but I wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not. How is their root spread?

Ecuador Pink never gets real big and bushy like the others. The main roots stay down below the plants. New growth if they die back comes from the roots near the surface of the soil and usually more than one stem coming from the ground. I would allow a minimum of 1 1/2' space between brug root ball and other perennial plants because in a few years you are adapt to have brug stems coming up in the middle of your perennials. Annuals shouldn't cause any problems. Whiskers will need the most room as mine always makes multiple stems when regrowing from winter.

Becky sometimes they just die for no reason when rooting. I have 4 I just threw out. They were growing leaves then just wilted and died. All the others next to them are fine

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

All of mine lived except one. I will take a picture tomorrow if I think about it. I will have to get a couple of the names from you again, cause I forgot what they are. One of them is MM, what's that one?
~Lucy

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Donna! As always, YOU are such wealth of knowledge! Very helpful info! Thank you! Ecuador Pink is the one in the front garden in a pot. It seems to like it there, so I may leave it in a pot or plant it in the ground there.

Do the Sphinx moths and Hummingbirds like the blooms?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

yes the Sphinx Moths love them. I have also seen a hummingbird go to them in early morning before blooms close for the day

Lucy MM is Mountain Magic which is the darkest pink/reddish there that I know of. It is very beautiful

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh poo! My MM starts didn't make it! Just the color I was looking for too!

Donna - We'll have to work out something so I can get a couple of cuttings of your MM later in the year when you prune yours again. The blooms are the very color I was looking for since most reds won't grow in my warm climate. Do you have a Dr. Seuss brug? If so, how does it do for you? Another trader offered me a cutting later in the year. Beautiful yellow blooms! :-) I need a bigger yard!!! LOL!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Becky try to stay away from yellow and orange brugs here in the south. They get the SB virus very easily. I had to destroy my Dr Suess, Kell's Big Yella, Variegate Jamie, New Orleans Lady, and Gypsy Queen last summer. So far my whisker has not come down with it. summer 2006 was fine as we were in drought but summer 2007 I got lots of rain and the plants broke out. I believe it is in the soil and excessive wetness causes the break out. The white and pinks are susecptable too if coming in close contact with infected plants. I got some replacements for some I lost that I have rooted in pots and they stay on the concrete walk way now. It will be late summer or fall before I can give you another MM. Mine are in the ground and die back for winter

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

I am willing to take any seeds from anyone I love to grow them.

James

Donna - Very interesting. All of my Brugs are in pots currently and doing well. I really do like the MM and the Dr. Seuss. Maybe I will try to keep those in pots if I get cuttings rooted for them. Late summer/fall is fine with me, Donna. I just really appreciate the cuttings you have shared with me! :-)

QUESTION: Does anyone here grow their brugs in large pots instead of the ground? If so, how do they do in a container? Do they stay smaller than if they were grown in the ground? Any special needs if they are grown in containers?

Questions, questions...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

James - I sent you a d-mail before I saw your post. So now I know what seeds you were wanting! :-)

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Becky, I grow them in large pots as well and yes they do grow a bit smaller but the blooms are the same..

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Would you all mind, sharing some seed starting tips for brugs? I have never tried them before and there doesn't seem to be much info on the net.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

a lot of patience Meredith. Some seeds may come up in a couple of weeks and some 2 months and some 4 to 6 months and these can all be from the same pod. I like to peel off some of the heaviest cork and soak them overnight in warm water. Then I pot them up in peat just barely covering. Keep lightly damp and in full sun or under grow lights and if starting now you would need to keep them warm about 70 degrees

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'd like to extend my thanks to Becky for sending me the seeds. I've soaked them and will have them potted up, just as Donna described above. (Some also add a few drop of peroxide into the soaking water -- to presumably irradicate any bugs?) So with Becky's seed I just tried this method out.

And like Donna's stated, they do vary greatly. I've sown a flat of my own seeds in Feb. 4th. Today I've approximately 1/3 of the numbers germinated and become about 2" tall. Other still appear "sleepy" yet. lol.

Donna, it's nice to meet up with you here. The cuttings that you've shared are doing terrific except a couple loss. The rest are thriving, I can't hardly wait until spring's official arrival. In warm days, I'm so tempted to move all my brugs outdoor. lol
Happy gardening everyone.

For anyone who got some of these Brug seeds from me, I wanted to let you know that Jaye (Heavenscape) found out that they were already a named cross. They were named "Flirtation". See near the bottom of this site link:

Thanks Jaye!

Congrats, Kim on your 2 new babies!

Becky, the timing of the news is perfect! Just in time spring harralds here in my zone. I'm so happy. Many, many thanks.
Have you got any senna alata germinated for your butterfly garden yet? I have four of those coming up, and will be ready to hardening off pretty soon.

no Becky the seeds cross is not already named. There are bunches and bunches of all the same crosses. The seeds have to be grown out. If it make a nice plant/color and color comes true to cuttings then it can be registered and named. It is best to grow them for 2 flowering years. Believe it or not the color can change from the first year to the next. if it does then it needs to grow for a third flowering year to know for sure what the color is.

I have a Butterfly x L'Amour cross my friend grew out from another friends seed. It was a nice pink. She sent me a cutting to grow(trailing it) Mine bloomed Orange Sherbert colored last summer. She was all upset thinking she had somehow sent me the wrong cutting but then her second year blooms were also Orange Sherbert color. So we have to see what it does this year for her to decide it she wants to register it or not. I think I will keep it named or not. It is very pretty, very hardy, and a heavy bloomer

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you so very, very much Donna! I had started a thread on the Brug forum asking about this because I am very uneducated about this plant. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/825516/

All I know is that they are beautiful, the hummingbird moths love them, and so do I! :-)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Quote from another site "Each seed in any Brugmansia seed pod is a brand new hybrid that may or may not physically resemble one of its parent plants or any of the other seed pod siblings"

the key words are "Each seed in any Brugmansia seed pod is a brand new hybrid" meaning you have to grow them out to see if it is worthy of registering and naming

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Officially Registered Brugs hybridized by different people but all from the same cross of Pink Beauty x Ecuador Pink

Flirtation

Painted Lady

Donna - OH WOW! I had NO IDEA that MEM or Painted Lady came from PB X EP!!! I'm amazed!! How cool is that! Thanks for educating me about that! Fascinating! Now I see why everyone is so excited about growing Brugs from seeds! You might just get something worth naming! WOW!

I have found Morning Glories to be addicting. Now it looks like Brugs have a special place in my curiosity, too! And what is there NOT to love about Brugs???! Such amazing blooms! Thank you again Donna for sharing the cuttings with me! I hand-pollinated the cross myself due to the experience I've gotten from crossing MGs.

Boy oh boy! My hummers and moths are gonna be happy! I was watching my hummer go up and down some of my MG vines this morning sipping nectar. So cute!

And every night when I am out in the yard admiring my brug's fragrance and many other night bloomers, I get buzzed by the hummingbird moths! It seems there is buzzing in my yard day and night lately! LOL!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow! Such exciting news, thanks for all the fascinating info. about the offspring of PB x EP Donna. Thanks, Becky for sharing the excitingment with me and other DGers.

My Tersa Sphinx moth eclosed yesterday and I released it. have plenty of Pentas ready for it if it finds a mate

Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Heh everyone...I live in Vancouver, BC and any seed that you can send my way would be greatly appreciated. Im just brand new to DG, and just thought I would pop in and say hello to all of you. Im just starting to plan a deck with container gardening. Im trying to attract hummingbirds and butterflies and never even knew about brugs before, until now while joining this site.

I have contacted a local garderner here from DG and he told me that they are okay outside all year long. I would love to be able to start growing these and any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Dmail me I will send you some seeds......James
