Is that ok? I planted the angelonia two years ago, and didn't take care of it last summer. (Surgery last summer...) Anyway, was that a good idea? The plants were big, but quite leggy and messy growing between rose bushes. (Rose bushes are now gone. Too many pecticides...)
Jo
Cut back my angelonia just about to the ground.
Jo,
I also cut my angelonia to a bout 6 inches about 2 weeks ago....since had a freeze...mine probably won't make it. Last year I pulled them up at about the same time and replanted. Just decided to leave them to SEE if they MIGHT come back up, but I"m more north than you.
Connie
I cut mine back to about 6 inches in late summer and came back great. Not sure about this time of year.
I have relatives in Houston whose angellonias are perennials. Not here, though. However, my pots in the house and garage are doing okay. Connie, I'll bet yours will be fine.
Well, I'm hopeful that they'll make it, or I wouldn't have cut them back so far. Of course, after I did it, I had second thoughts. :)
Jo
Yes, they will be fine. One tough plant for down here, sometimes they do freeze to death here, but sometimes they don't. That can also depend where on the property they are--I've grown them for 10 years, super easy to root too.
Mine in pots got frozen back and I noticed they are putting on new growth at the base. I will cut them back and enjoy. No doubt yours will return also.
I just went outside and looked...I have no new growth. It seems that lots of plants in POTS seem to weather the weather better...how could that be??? Do the sides of the pot offer protection? We may be "onto" something here!
Connie ~ sorry, I set the pots in a plant shelter. A couple of really cold nites did freeze the tender foliage in there. I would think in general the pots would make the root system more vulnerable.
How much sun does everyone have their angelonias in? The one I planted in the ground got less sun than the one I planted in a pot. The one in the ground didn't make it. Jury still out on the one in the pot.I think the one in the pot got more water also.(the one in the ground was competing with tree roots for water.)I'm trying to figure out the right conditions for this little beauty....
They handle full sun here with no problems.
About six or seven hours of full sun a day in my bed.
Jo
They do freeze in about half the winters down here, now I'm north of I10 and well west of most of the "concrete" of Houston.
I not only cut mine back two weeks ago, I transplanted them. They loved where they were growing, but were too large in the space. Of course, I dowsed them in SuperThrive after relocation. I noticed today new growth and new blooms. Although on the northwest side of my home, I am in Bellaire so we're sort of in the "banana belt" here.
Full sun here and even evening sun but mine were potted so they required more water maybe... They bloomed exceptionally all summer without even fertilizing much.
I've got new growth coming out on my white anagelonia. Yay!
Jo ~ I felt the same way when I saw mine... lol
Oh poo...it's too late to go out and check mine...but they're on a high area...might get too much cold wind to have survived.
And...mine are purple....Jo...do you think one type is more susceptible (that does't look right...WHEN are we getting a spell-checker?? haha) than another to freezing?
Connie, I really don't know. My angelonia in the ground is "Serena white." I also have some purple in pots, and I don't see anything but weeds growing in them. Of course, I didn't take care of anything in the pots during the winter. . They're behind my garage in the pot ghetto where they are "out of sight, out of mind," iykwim. :)
All I see are weeds also...boo hoo....I guess the white is more hardy? Anyone? I don't do white flowers (For the time being) so the white ones are out; I"ll just have to keep buying in the spring and hoping for a mild winter one year.
Connie ~ I saved seed. I had purple, lavender and white. I kept the purple separate and think I still have some left... are you interested?
Podster,
Thanks SO MUCH but I'm too impatient AND lacking in time since I'm a high school teacher who grades her life away!
I'll just buy some and plant again. I DID go outside this morning and scraped a branch and it's GREEN! Doesn't that mean it's still alive???
I suspect we are "impatient" gardeners... I understand on the seeds. I like instant gratification here. LOL
So does anyone know the answer to my question: If I scraped the branch close to the ground and it's GREEN inside, does that mean it wil come out?
I would think yes, it is still alive but only time will tell...
